    New DC

According to this website Chizik has some interest in Billy D’Ottavio. He is the DC at Samford University and coached the secondary when Chizik was DC at UCF. This was his first year at Samford. They are 1AA and lost 5 games. Their defense looked good other than 1 game where they gave up 62.

Not a 'splash' big name hire. But a guy Chizik knows and obviously respects.

    Re: New DC

Another guy Chizik has coached with in the past...

Iowa State: Sources tell FootballScoop that Gene Chizik is interested in talking with Samford University defensive coordinator Billy D’Ottavio. D’Ottavio served as the secondary coach at Central Florida when Chizik was the defensive coordinator.

    Re: New DC

    Not all bad...

D'Ottavio comes to Samford from Tulane where he served as the assistant head coach from 2004 to 2006. At Tulane University, he coached cornerbacks. In 2005, the Green Wave ranked first in Conference USA in pass defense. D'Ottavio served on the coaching staff at the University of Central Florida from 1999 to 2003. He coached linebackers while at UCF, and served as the team's defensive coordinator in 2002 and 2003. In 2000, the UCF defense ranked sixth in the nation in sacks and tied for 10th in the nation in turnovers gained.

According to their schedule the most points they gave up was 35 to App State and 34 to Ole Miss. They did win a game 62-0 though.

My bad. They won 62-0! App. State is two-time defending National Champs and still playing in the playoffs too.

Not sure if I like the idea of Chizik hiring another buddy that no one knows.

    Re: New DC

I bet if you look at the list of coaches both defensive and offensive that Chizik has coached with, you will get a pretty good list of who he is looking at. Especially on the defensive end. He is going to go with somebody that he knows understand and can teach the Tampa 2.

    Re: New DC

Pretty much what should be expected as far as a hire goes.

If it ends up being him, hopefully he has what it takes and also has some recruiting pipelines.

    Re: New DC

IMO... Chizik still runs the D if he hires this guy, puts this guy in the secondary and sort of an assistant DC

    Re: New DC

Following that logic, is he really just looking for a secondaries coach that he can mentor.

    Re: New DC

If Chizik doesn't call the defense I'll be disappointed...I mean wouldn't you if your career was on the line?

    Re: New DC

I would hope to get a bigger name coach at DC than this, but if GC has more involvement with the defense than maybe this would be a good move. Just a side note, cruising the Samford sight, Steve Brickey is the Offensive Coordinator.
