    What if?

First of all, I really like coach Chizik and predict he will be the Big 12 coach of the year next year. Things are being built the right way and I see a solid foundation for a long time. We just need patience unfortunately.

BUT, the "what if" side of me wonders how Brian Kelly would have done if we would have hired him. I do think he's a great coach, but, he inherrited a lot of talent in a weaker conference. But now he is being talked up for the Notre Dame job. Not bad for our 2nd choice. Anyway, I keep seeing his success, and it's just hard not to wonder "what if?"

I do see Chizik staying here longer than Kelly if succes brings other opportunities, though. After it's all said and done, I still think Pollard made the right choice. It was just a tough season. I really do think we will go to a bowl next year.

Kelly would have been here for 1 or 2 years and then took a better job and left us with no talent.

You're right. Its so much better losing 14 out of the last 16 conference games.

Its fun to talk about BK and stir the pot, but I can't get over 2 things. First, he walked into a loaded team. D'Antoni (or however you spell it) had things cooking before he left for MSU. Secondly, have you ever seen BK on the sidelines? His demeanor, language, and actions towards players and opposing coaches are an embarrassment.

    Re: What if?

Yeah, but he won the Big East, not exactly a football power conference

If Kelly was here, I still think we would be in the same postion we are now.

Not only that, but he would be promoting him self for the next job the whole time.

Kelly would have been right where Chizik is now. So would Brewster, or Harbaugh, or any of the other names that were bandied about.

You don't think GC is thinking about the future also. To think that GC will be our coach for the next 40 years (like Jo Pa), or even have the same tenure as Mac is crazy.

I don't want to think this but the fact of the matter is that ISU is not exactly the greatest place to coach and if GC ever turns around the program, then other schools will be calling.

This is right on the money. I'm not convinced that BK was ever our second choice or even a serious candidate. He's won everywhere he's been but his methods would not fly at ISU. It's not just the profanity and childish behavior on the field either. If you aren't aware of his years at Central Michigan, his players racked up criminal records (including 2nd degree murder) at a rate that makes Iowa look like a bunch of Boy Scouts.

Gene Smith, 1993-2000. 7 years, 6 NCAA's, 1 bowl game. Revenue sports postseason participation 50%. Good.
    Bruce Vandevelde, 2000-20005. 5 years, 4 bowl games, 2 NCAA's, 2 NIT's. Postseason participation 80%. Better.
    Jamie Pollard, 2005-. 4 years. 1 bowl game, 0 NCAA's, 0 NIT's. Postseason participation: 13%. The next big step.

My ignore list: splitidentity, tarheelhawk, superdorf, clones_jer. That is all.

    Re: What if?

I don't think there is any question we would be a much better team right now. Kelly knows how to run a program and has actual head coaching experience.

That being said, who would be better for the program long term might still be up in the air. My money is on Chizik still.

I agree, but if Chiz turns the program around, I think:

    A. he will have earned a better job. Doing well at ISU is about as big of a challenge as there is in college football. We are in a LOADED conference, have essentially no tradition (at least positive tradition), and have a ton of things going against us. Doing well here would make him something along the lines of Bill Snyder.

    B. He will leave ISU in significantly better shape than when he came. Much like Mac, moving from where we started under his tenure to where we were when he left, while not significantly different in wins and losses, was light years (ok, maybe a light year) in terms of a program overall.
