My girlfriend and her brother own a jewelry store.....

and Balken, Linden, and 22 reminded me of this in an earlier thread. You know, the sell us your old gold jewelry commercial?
Does anyone know if you have to sign a waiver or a disclaimer to at least give the recipient some semblance of proper ownership? Any reputable jewelry store asks many tactful questions to garner enough information to learn beyond a reasonable doubt that the gold you are turning in actually belongs to you!
Nothing like having a fence, for you to turn in anything that is stolen, which would be very difficult to trace. I think that the people who own this company are not providing a service, they are providing an outlet for illegal activity.
Is there another business out there that seems to just scream illegal activity like this one?

I know that I sure love the idea of sending something valuable to someone I don't know and trusting that they'll send me the same value in money, once my valuables are in their possession. Seems perfectly legit to me

While I'm with you that these commercials are rather annoying....

Is it really all that different from Ebay?

I love the skank in those Gold Kit ads that talks about sending in her wedding band from her first marriage and getting money the very next day. It helps that she rocks a Jersey accent.

I guess my first response is that there really is no need for you to send your gold anywhere, when you can be paid for it in the same manner you would at your local jewelry store. They will determine the weight and the quality and reimburse you based on the current market price for its content. Which I think you would say is a wholesale transaction.
On E-bay, you take the chance of not even being paid the wholesale amount, and I understand in some circumstances, not at all. I assume you take the same risk when you send your jewelry off to a stranger as Erik so aptly put it. Unless you can't leave your house, I see no advantage what-so-ever other than the convenience of not having to face someone with questions about where the gold came from. Just my opinion of course and I am a bit biased in this regard. My home was broken into some years ago, and all of my jewelry was stolen, and of course the police still have no clue.
