    McGettigan

WWW.GoCyclones.com has two articles (pertinent to this thread) - one suggesting strength and conditioning coach Matt McGettigan might stay and one suggesting that none of the old staff is going to stay. To the extent that the staff directory reflects the org chart, McGettigan seems to work for Andrew Moser on behalf of the football program. Strength and conditioning doesn't sound like something that varies with defensive and offensive schemes. An earlier post on this site indicated a belief that McGettigan was doing a good job and the articles indicate he is the only football related employee still on the job.

    Re: McGettigan

He seems pretty talented, but if they know someone that works out better, than good for them. McGettigan has done a pretty damn good job though, at least workout plans would stay the same, and Getty has always been a hardass which seems to be what a lot of these guys are like, so it should be interesting!

Or we could do like Nebraska did. They kept the old strength guy, had him do some additional fundraising, and hired a new football strength fellow. Maybe Matt can be a fundraiser for JP.

What is Mosers title at ISU? Ive seen him on the bench and sidelines the last couple years and wasnt sure. I worked with him at the Deans List and he was a great guy.

    Re: McGettigan

I talked with an undisclosed member of the team (a starter from last year) and he said he hopes the first thing Chizik does is fire the strength & conditioning coach. He said almost every team, with the exception of UNI, was bigger and stronger than ISU (yes, even Toledo). He said they got pushed around in every game this year and he felt it was because they didn't have as good of strength & conditioning program as the other teams. I know nothing about our s/c guy now, but thats what the player told me.

    Re: McGettigan

It seems Getty has been known to work more on flexibility, endurance, and other things to try to make the guys better overall athletes. Other schools' strength coaches work more on building pure strength. So there are a couple of different methods that a S&C Coach can have. Not saying the certain player is right or wrong, but Getty WAS named S&C Coach of the Year in 2000 fwiw.

    Re: McGettigan

Nebraska had a strength coach two years ago that added weight to the blockers. Result - no pancake blocks recorded. Then the next strength round went to explosiveness off the line. That was better. Seems like there are big 6'-6" Michigan guys who can weigh 300 and motor like a Hummer, and then there are shorter 300 pound tanks that just go straight ahead. We had tanks this year. We need more "Hummer like" oline people.

    Re: McGettigan

I have heard Getty got that award in 2000. But it seems like we are weak in the trenches and can't get any push. Iowa Coach Doyel seems like his guys are on steroids. He has had numerous guys like Gallery that have come in at 220-230 and leave weighing 330 with necks twice the size of their head.

I'm not sold on the hype of Getty, and if GC thinks he has a better man, I am all for it.

On a side note, I was wondering what Marty Fine was doing these days. He is a Division II Coach whose team has shown great improvement and tied for their conference championship. According to the article I read, their offense was very strong with an excellent O-Line. I always thought Fine s*cked, but maybe our Strength Coach isn't giving the right workout also.

    Re: McGettigan

It isn't about SC, its about coaching football. Between Fine and Cotton, we haven't exactly had the best offensive minds running things. Of course the lack of development of the OL was a big part of the problem. Loney was the last guy who consistently did a nice job.

    Yes, you are exactly right!
