Sampson to receive NCAA's harshest penalty

ESPN - Sources: NCAA punishes Kelvin Sampson, spares Indiana Hoosiers

I think this is a little B.S. Indiana knew what they were getting in Sampson he ran from OU to IU to get away from possible infractions. Indiana should be held accountable more so than their self-imposed punishment, and I do feel if it was anyother university than Indiana and Crean wasnt coaching there, things would be different. I do feel Sampson should be banned from the NCAA for 5 years.

In my opinion 5 years is not long enough for that weasel. Ooohoo, take the money and run.

Basically all they lost is one scholarship for one year. The Lucca Staiger penalty was more severe. There is right and there is wrong and this is wrong. Cue up the Tom Crean piece on the Big Ten Network delivering Toys for Tots to go along with the Kirk Ferentz Parkersburg piece and the Joe Paterno Spunky Old Guy story. Brings tears to the eyes of Big Ten fans but makes me throw-up in my mouth.

NCAA resides in Indianapolis. They might have feared their houses might be fire bombed and consequently carried a light stick.

Re: IU Gets Lucky with Sanctions

If you watched their game vs. Notre Dame last night you would know they didn't exactly get off scot free. While it may seem like Iowa State got the shaft in comparisson to Indiana I think they were both fitting. Iowa State's "punishment" was only directed at one player, and the rule, while flawed, is a good thing in order to keep European pros from coming over to the college game. Lucca served his year, and while it sucked the year is over and Lucca and our team can bouce back. Indiana's "punishment" was losing their coach and we have all seen the huge fallout from that. They are hurting now, but Crean will have them back to their old selfs in a year or two. I like Crean, and I believe he does things the right way. Thank God Sampson got ran, and good luck to Crean.

don't get this wrong, IU did not get off scot free. Look at the team they fielded this year - they have been gutted. Also, it is not just 1 scholly, it is recruiting restrictions, official visit restrictions, etc.

From Wikipedia: Myles David Brand (born May 17, 1942) is the president of the United States' National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and prior to that served as the sixteenth president of Indiana University.

Those recruiting sanctions really proved costly. You have got to be kidding me. There 2009 class is #7 nationally: http://basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=879497#rank One scholarship for one year. These sanctions are an absolute joke!!!

So you want them to suffer several years into the future for something a former coach of theirs did? Sampson is gone, his assistants are gone, and all of the players he coached are gone. From here on out it is Crean, and if Crean recruited the 7th best class in the nation, more power to him.

The school should suffer severely in this case especially in light of the fact that they hired Calvin Sampson in the wake of recruiting violations at Oklahoma.

I don't know, I guess I just don't buy it. By punishing the "school" you are really punishing the current players, coaches and fans that had nothing to do with how all of this played out. I don't know if the AD lost his job or not, but maybe that should have happened. In these situations I believe you should remove the problem (Sampson and maybe some Admins.), and the current players, Crean and fans were not the problem. Sampson is gone, and will be stuck as an assistant coach the rest of his life unless he resurfaces at Soutwest Obscure State. Plus, this way Crean is not at Marquette stealing our recruits, someone else is now .

Part of that though is how he got the current players. I don't like the fact of punishing players anymore than you, but if he built a team by cheating, it still puts everyone else that followed the rules at a disadvantage. Part of punishing the school and the team is to show kids, "Hey, keep an eye out for yourself. IF you sign with a weasel who is cought, you might be branded a weasel as well.

Accountabilty!!! Don't date a girl who was cheating on a dude when you met her and then be surprised when she cheats on you.

Same thing here they KNEW what they were getting, but they wanted to win...the program should be punished...any other school would have.

After the NCAA dropped the atom bomb (a.k.a. the death penalty) on SMU for their recruiting violations, and considering not just the football team, but pretty much the entire athletic department itself hasn't recovered more than 20 years later, the NCAA isn't going to implement the kinds of sanctions on virtually any member school that you would wish them to, regardless of whether Brand was a former president of IU or not...
