25 Best Cities to Find a Job...

    25 best cities to find a job - CNN.com

Just found this interesting. Results were based primarily on unemployment rate and job growth.

    11. Ames, Iowa
    14. Iowa City, Iowa
    19. Des Moines, Iowa
    15. Sioux City, Iowa

Four our of the twenty-five are in Iowa (and of course, just another list that proves Iowa State is better than EIU).

In iowa city there is a high demand for law enforcement personnel, court reporters, and probation officers. Reasons are obvious.

I'm surprised to see Ames so high on that list, I mean besides the University what is there really?

Not much, which is why so many grads leave the town and even the state.

Re: 25 Best Cities to Find a Job...

Ames actually has a lot of small start up companies. Several are on the software development side. I work for one but know of at least a dozen others I've had direct contact with and a few more I've only heard of. Most are founded by current/former professors and recent graduates.

Re: 25 Best Cities to Find a Job...

These kind of articles are the result of a desire for "insta-story." Take a topic of the day (economy, education, etc.), come up with a simplistic formula to evaluate U.S. cities and produce a list. Add some mindless commentary and you have filled a few column inches for the next publication.

I did not see Detroit or Camden or Chula Vista or Jacksonville on that list. Maybe the Midwest will do better in this recession.

There may be a lot of jobs, but there also are a lot of college students in competition for the upper level ones. I don't know in general.

What do most of the states on that list have in common?
