    Recruiting..JUCO or Not

I am wondering if GC will try to go for the quick fix and go heavy on the JUCO recruiting for the next couple of years.

Of this years seniors at least 12 started at some point this season. On top of that almost all of our top returning talent will be seniors next year - Blythe, Meyer, Bowen, Banks, Moses, Barkema, Berg, Braaksma, Rubin, Culbertson.

Knowing that this year's late start puts us at a disadvantage to begin with, are there more top tier JUCO players available at this point vs. high school? I know MAC had some big successes with Wallace, Dobbins, Hicks and Bowen, although I think overall probably only half of the JC players that he brought in ever started.

If GC goes with all HS players for the next 2 years, we would have better talent and depth in years 3-4. However, without JC players we will be playing with freshmen and MAC's holdover 2nd and 3rd stringers the next couple years.

    Re: Recruiting..JUCO or Not

Absolutely. As stated before, recruiting is about relationships with the coach and school. This will take time and Juco's can make an impact quickly.

    Re: Recruiting..JUCO or Not

I think we need to get a couple JUCO O-linemen just to fill holes.

Hopefully this will allow some of the young guys (do we have any O-linemen with promise) to develop.

I say take a few Juco Olinemen.
Other than that, I say build for 2,3 and 4 years down the road.

    Re: Recruiting..JUCO or Not

Given next year's scholarship allotment, if the options are to offer a high school player that is unlikely to be an impact player on the team versus a juco that is likely to be an impact player, then juco seems the best route to me.

With all the holes on the O-line (lost 4 seniors + no depth) I would sure hope that we look at some Jucos to fill the o-line for the short-term.

    Re: Recruiting..JUCO or Not

I don't think it's even an option (not to) at this point. With the losses on the o-line, next season could be even more punishing on Meyer. Mac said repeatedly that the starters (who were seniors) were the best he had by a wide margin.

Yeah well, ya know, that's just, like uh, your opinion, man.

O line guys bulk up by junior year - therefore, expect jucos from Ellsworth. We have 3 of the best teachers for oline guys now hired. Juco all the way. And, Santa, while you are at it, send me a juco running back that can actually plow.

    Re: Recruiting..JUCO or Not

I'd be surprised if at least 1/2 of this year's class isn't JUCO. Does anyone know how many schollies there are to offer this year?

I would think as many as he wants, since he can just ditch schollies for current players he doesn't think have a future.

    Re: Recruiting..JUCO or Not

We graduated 23 seniors and I think all but maybe one were on scholarship. Figuring in 2-3 guys through normal attrition will give us the NCAA max of 25 for next year.

    Re: Recruiting..JUCO or Not

We will most likely see a heavy dose of JUCo's for the first couple of years till Coach Chizik gets his recruiting going. Then it should taper off and we will then see what type of recruiting Coach Chizik can and will do. I do not expect a 9-3 season next year or the year after. I do expect a improved offensive scheme and a given Tampa 2 defense being fully installed in 2 years.

Its a wait and see scenerio

    Re: Recruiting..JUCO or Not

In my opinion, GC's blend of JUCO's and frosh recruiting will be a factor of two things:

1st, how many really quality high school recruits are still out there and obtainable.

2nd, how much emphasis is there on instant results. In other words, is the coach willing to sacrifice next year's results a little by taking the time to develop the new younger guys or try and use more seasoned JUCO's instead to win now.

Of course, like most things, it will work out in the middle somewhere.
