Debate: Haluska or Smith in the NBA?

I thought I would get a debate going on Haluska and Smith for Iowa. Which has a better chance at the NBA, or do both/neither of them?

Smith is obviously young and has a lot to learn so it's probably premature to debate it, but what the heck...

In my opinion Smith doesn't look nearly as good as Iowa fans had hyped him up to be. He's good but I think against Big Ten competition that he'll just be an average to above average player this year. He seems like a kid that would look to make the jump to the NBA at the first chance and I wouldn't be surprised to see him sign an agent after his Sophomore season if he starts believing the hype Iowa fans are shouting. It would be a mistake seeing him so far but he'll probably have a good future at Iowa nonetheless.

Haluska is not my favorite person in the world for many reasons but I also wanted to see what people thought since Iowa fans think he's absolutely amazing. Of course they also expected Tate to win the Heisman and that didn't exactly work out as planned...

I personally think his size and lack of creating ability will keep him from ever having a chance but it's fun to see what others think. He just doesn't really fit any NBA position. If he had more speed and agility I would say he has a chance but he's far too slow and streaky for the NBA. Possibly oversees but that would be all I could imagine.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

Smith, he has great potential from what I can see. I am going to go out on a limb and say that dear little Adam has maxed out his potential.

Re: Debate: Haluska or Smith in the NBA?

I think Haluska is far too streaky to be an NBA player, especially considering he's a senior. Would I love to have a player like him on our team: YES. I just think he's not athletic enough to create on his own against the "big boys." He's kinda like a Jeff Horner. Good, hard-nosed player, but just doens't have the athleticism.

How about a comparison of Haluska to Hornacek?

Re: Debate: Haluska or Smith in the NBA?

Huluska is waayyyyy too inconsistant. He's hot or cold. Plus he hasnt really shown any improvement since his frosh. year, and infamous trait of Alford coached players. Smith seems to play both inside and out. Ask me again when Smith is a junior, even though a lot think hell elave early.
I just dont see Huluska in the NBA. Maybe if he could shoot lights out from 3. But Smith has the size that NBA exec want in a 3 nowadays.

Smith has a lot of power for his size and he can go up pretty strong. It will be interesting to see if he develops at all under Alford.

Exactly. Smith has the better shot.

Re: Debate: Haluska or Smith in the NBA?

I agree with all the comments. While Haluska is a decent college player, he is too inconsistent and doesn't have the ability to create anything. About all he takes are threes or off balance jumpers that either go in or are way off the mark. And I don't think he would be starting at a lot of college programs with the lack of improvement he's shown over his 4+ years in the NCAA.

It will be very interesting to see if Smith develops at all under Alford. He can go up with a lot of power but can he continue to improve?

Or better yet, a comparison of Haluska to Hoiberg? I don't remember Fred being a great shooter or super fast with tons of moves but he did pretty good as an NBA player.

Re: Debate: Haluska or Smith in the NBA?

I hope your not serious on thinking Haluska has a shot in the NBA??? I has a better chance of running track for the USA then play a second in the NBA. Will and Curtis have 10x the talent he has and they didn't make it.

Nope, nobody has though he has a chance so far:)

I think Smith is a great freshman! I would love to have him on our team. Haluska won't be in the NBA but Smith has a chance i guess. Hard to tell this early!

Smith has bigger upside. Haluska can play in Greece.

Okay, Haluska is good enough to play in Poland forever. And Smith is no more than CBA.

    Please tell me you're joking.

Yeah well, ya know, that's just, like uh, your opinion, man.

I think a better comparison for Haluska is former Hawk Luke Recker. I actually think Recker is a better player then Haluska and he couldn't make it in the NBA. He has been on a few different Summer League rosters, but nothing else.

From what little bit I have seen of Smith the first comparison that came to mind was also a former Hawk in Ricky Davis. Both are very athletic, Davis like Smith looked to have a lot of potential, but was very young when he decided to make the jump to the NBA. I think Smith has a shot, but would definitely benefit from staying all 4 years.
