51% of Iowa FB team majors in "Sports Studies"

58% of USC Football team majors in Sociology.

Matter of fact, Social Sciences is the most popular major of all Div 1 athletes by the time they are Juniors & Seniors.

Cigaretteman posted this USA Today article a couple days ago, and it got zero responses.

    http://www.cyclonefanatic.com/forum/...ncing-act.html

So I thought I'd change the thread title and sensationalize it for the sake of discussion.

This is getting to be a joke the way Div 1 programs are using these student-athletes. We're lucky Iowa State isn’t listed in the USA Today study, because we're probably no different.

I'm not picking on Sociology specifically, but I feel something needs to be addressed about this phenomenon of 'Clustering" athletes in specific curriculums just to keep them eligible.

Read the article and see the testimonials from the K-State and Boise St athletes who claim their degree is a joke. They spend 4-years at college and have nothing to show for it; many of them have to reenter college again to get a degree that's relevant to today's job values.

I brought this up years ago, about our Basketball team under Eustachy where most majored in Sociology, and was met with a lot of resistance from ISU fans. It seems most college sports fans don't care what happens to these kids when they leave our University - just keep them eligible in meaningless curriculums - as long as our team continues going to bowl games.

As one professor said, "Institutions of higher learning are today semi-pro training camps for semi-literate indentured servants".

College athletes cluster majors at most schools

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/colle...-graphic_N.htm

When the NCAA adopted new rules in 2003 intended to improve graduation rates of athletes, critics countered that under pressure to keep athletes progressing toward a degree, schools might cut academic corners to help the athletes stay eligible to play.
Teams now can lose scholarships and access to postseason play if enough athletes are not on track to receive a degree or do not graduate.

My major, Communications, is also a popular athlete's major. I guess I would want to go in depth and learn what 'Sports Studies' is about.

The reality is, no one cares what student athletes major in. The only thing anyone cares about is filling seats, winning and making money.

According to the USA Today study, Communications was one of the top 4 curriculum; Sociology #1.

According to the article, "Clustering" athletes in cirriculums can create a bunch of concerns for fraud and abuse - to the point where even the professors are involved.

I dont know if any of you ever ponder what you might like to go back and study if you could do it all over again. I know I think about that from time to time.

First, I would give dentistry a long hard look. Then I would realize there would be too many courses I wouldnt want to take, and the pain of that woudnt be worth the paycheck for me.

Sociology is one...I think I would be fascinated by that.

I'll never forget when El Robertson playe in a bowl game his senior year at KSU. They had him listed as "undeclared" for a major. Even the announcers had to snicker at that one.

Yeah, I'd find Art History "fascinating" - but not sure if I'd want to spend four years of college tuition on it only to end up with something of limited utility.

Notice how you don't see a player's major flashed anymore during a game? Maybe the networks caught on to the embarrassing pattern.

    There was one?

There's nothing embarrassing about a degree in Watercolor or Basketweaving.

Re: 51% of Iowa FB team majors in "Sports Studies"

It's pretty sad, they really try and steer athletes towards Sociology at ISU. One of the main tutors was a retired Soc professor and a really big sports fan, he came out of retirement to teach a course and the advisors were really pushing people to take his class... When I transferred in I wanted to major in biology and they basically told me no dice... I managed Psych as a compromise....

So what you are trying to say is you are about as smart as an iowa athlete just trying to stay eligible?

Honestly I have a pretty useless degree in reality (English) but I got a good job in the finance industry which I have now parlayed into a better job in the finance industry that I will be starting Dec. 1st.

IMO you learn some skills in college but you learn the stuff you need to survive in the workforce actually at your job.
