    Listening to other cities' sportsradio

I was driving to/from/around KC yesterday and had a chance to listen to a couple of different sportsradio stations. Damn do we get the shaft in DM for local sportsradio.

First, 1460's signal strength is horrid. I lost it before I got to Osceola. 1700 was a little better and I got that until about the Iowa/Missouri line. I could get 590 out of Omaha all the way to KC.

I listened to 590 and 610 out of KC and both were excellent. I really liked Matt Perralt (?) on 590 in the afternoon. It was refreshing to hear actual entertaining sports discussion/debates. The two main topics were 1) who was the coach of the year in the Big 12 and who was the worst (Chizik got a lot of votes) and 2) how would a playoff system be structured. Perralt really knows his stuff...he reminded me of Deace knowledge-wise. 610 was also really good and spent most of the time talking about the Chiefs and the Royals getting Coco Crisp.

I know those are both larger metros than DM but we can't get anything better than Cotlar (who obviously knows very little about sports), Jon Miller, and M&M (whose "shock jock" radio and rants are wearing very thin). Can't we get a true sports fan who knows his stuff?

Im lucky...living in Dallas we have 1310 the Ticket...it is fantastic radio. When I come back to Iowa, I am shocked at how terrible it is.

Living in KC I like listening to 610 and sometimes 810 they do a good job of covering all Big 12 schools and time to time have segments on ISU

Re: Listening to other cities' sportsradio

Not currently living in Iowa, I'm not too familiar with the current DM hosts, but in general the really talented entertaining hosts are going to leave for bigger markets. The ones that aren't are the ones that stick around. I was recently back in Ames and watched Miller and Deace (?) on cable a couple times to hear what was going on with Iowa sports, but it was unwatchable. It seemed more like a public access show.

I know a lot of people knock Jon Miler, but he really does his reserach and knows his stuff. Most of the time, his first segment presents a lot of numbers I didn't know.

1700 the Champ broke Bo signing with Iowa State today, quoting him as saying he picked "Iowa State over 16 other schools", that's great too bad this happened quite awhile ago.

Re: Listening to other cities' sportsradio

1460 does have a good strong singal, but its coming from somewhere other than Des Moines. Monday morning I heard a recap of some NFL team and Cotlar interview Jon Walters at the same time. Well I kind of heard the Walters interview. With all the stations Clear Channell owns in Des Moines and some of them having the same playlist you think they could put the "top rated" station on a better place so they could really kick ***.

Cool. Those guys were pretty fun. Newy was always decked out for the newscasts on NBC.

590 is pretty good when they aren't drowning in Husker kool aid.

I think people need to relax about DM radio. I have listened to other major city sports radio. For example....take The Score in Chicago. Its awesome if you want to talk about Bears, Bulls, Whitesox and Cubs. Nothing else though. You get really arrogant host on some "big time" stations and it annoys me. Just one example. Just my 2 cents. I don't think KC and Omaha are too bad.

Re: Listening to other cities' sportsradio

I have always been a big fan of Kevin Kietzman. Sure, he ticks me off from time to time, but I always admired the way he separated opinions stories from news stories. When there is a news story, such as the stadium tax issue down there a few years ago, for the K and Arrowhead, he hammers it.

When the Iowa City Press Citizen released those letters from the alleged victim's mother back in mid July, I spent a lot of time preparing for those shows those days, and I thought back a lot to how I heard Kevin handle things like that.

Another aspect of KK's show that I am envious of is that he has Danny Clinkscale as his sidekick. Danny isn't the world's greatest broadcaster, but he is another guy there on the mic to bounce things off of and have a conversation, and he also keeps Kevin in check.

I read around here a lot that folks think my show would be better if I had a Cyclone counterpart. I happen to agree with you to an extent; having a co-host would certainly make the program stronger throughout a majority of the season. I am probably selfish during football season, because I like flying solo during those three or four months. But the other eight, I would love a co-host. I love listening to M&M, and I love their ability to play off of one another. I would certainly love to have something like that the majority of the time, also someone to keep me in check on the rare instance I am wrong ;)

I feel bad for the radio hosts in Iowa as a lot of people in Iowa are either ISU or Iowa fans vs being sports fans in general.
