    Crazy BCS What If

Listening to 1700 on the way home today, presented an interesting BCS scenario. Here is the article he based his discussion on but went further and said how it was possible that Missouri could win the Big 12 championship game and get snubbed (again) by the BCS.

ESPN - Brad Edwards: No conference title, no problem

    Basically under this scenario:
    1. Florida loses to FSU and then beats Alabama in the SEC Championship.
    2. OU beats Texas Tech
    3. Missouri beats OU in the Big 12 title game.

It is possible that Texas and Texas Tech would be #1 and #2 in the BCS (neither even won their division within their conference) and would play for the BCS champsion while Missouri would be left out because of the "2-team rule."

Wouldn't an 8 team playoff solve all of this crap?

    Re: Crazy BCS What If

A playoff would solve it you would think, but i believe the bowl games bring in too much revenue the just get rid of them. Unless some bowls were kept and the BCS bowls were turned into an 8 team playoff...just thinking outloud here..

    Re: Crazy BCS What If

would Mizzou really be left out in that circumstance? Doesn't the fact that they win the Big 12 guarantee them a BCS birth? You'd have some pretty unhappy tigers on your hands. and yes, a playoff would solve it nicely. We're going to end up with a lot of 1 loss teams at the end of this year, and potentially some undefeated small conference teams. Some schools are going to get left out, and it's going to be a mess.

    Re: Crazy BCS What If

I don't see how a playoff wouldn't generate more revenue. I would be in favor of a 16 team playoff (so you can include the BCS "busters" or a 12 team playoff with the top BCS ranked conference champions getting byes (so you'd have the best 4 teams to win their conference getting byes, even if it means the Mountain West or WAC gets a team with a bye).

I don't see how 11-15 extra games all under the NCAA/BCS wing wouldn't be beneficial to generating more revenue.

From the BCS website, the first criterion for inclusion in the BCS is that the two top teams in the BCS standings play in the NCG. The second criterion is the automatic bid for the conference champions. Since, in this scenario, UT and TT are selected by the first criterion, and only two teams per conference are allowed, MU does not get in.

    Re: Crazy BCS What If

there are 32 bowl games all bringing in money, this means you would need to do a 16 team playoff to generate the same amount of money from the bowl games...not against the playoff system at all but 16 team seems like a lot...but who knows maybe it would work.

You would have ALOT more TV eyes with a playoff then the Bowl games.

Attendance to those playoff games would be dismal though. Not everyone can travel across country 3-4 weeks in a row.

    Re: Crazy BCS What If

16 is way to much. I'd be good for like 4, 8 max. I agree attendence would be bad for playoff games, but TV viewership would go way up.

Personally I don't mind the system the way it is now.

    Re: Crazy BCS What If

This one isn't nearly as difficult as its being made out to be. In this scenario Alabama, Tech, Florida, and Oklahoma all have a loss. That makes the BCS title game Texas vs USC and Mizzou would go to the Fiesta Bowl.

That being said we do need to get this to an 8 team playoff with the 6 major conf champions and 2 at large and settle this thing on the field.

    Re: Crazy BCS What If

I still like the plus one system. Keep the games you have now. Only pick 8 teams to BCS games and have the top four teams go to two BCS bowls and the winners play in the BCS championship game. This way all current bowls would still mean something and I have fewer issues with people complaining on who's the number 5 team vs who's the number 3 team.

No kidding. How exciting was that USC vs. Illinois Rose Bowl game last year... oh, wait... nobody watched it.

This, unfortunately, is the biggest problem (imo) with a Playoff system.

    Re: Crazy BCS What If

I think for those of us that want a playoff system - we should really root for this scenario. Because it would be an absolute implosion of the system in many ways and I can't think of a better way to get a playoff system.

I really want to see Tech vs Alabama/Florida - but I could sacrifice that. :)

Seems really unlikely that Tech would be #2 after losing.
