    AA illegal substitution penalty

Was there ever any explanation for the illegal substitution penalty after AA got hurt? I noticed the Register had a story on him getting hurt and the backup QB quandary, who is apparently Darks, but conveniently ignored what seemed to be a coaching blunder and the subsequent penalty.

I would hope that both AA and the coaches knew he couldn't be in for the next play. It didn't mean much in the grand scheme of the game, but our lack of being able to get plays in on time, bad goal line play calling and now this are raising some question marks about the offensive staff being prepared for game day nuances.

If the medical staff has to come on the field and attend to you with the game stopping you have to sit out 1 play. He never did that, which is why it was illegal substitution.

    Re: AA illegal substitution penalty

From what I could see, it looked like Bueker was ready to come in at QB, but then AA came in and lined up wide as we did a direct snap. It looked like someone (it might have been Bueker) was running off the field at the last second. I could be wrong though. AA was supposed to sit out one play as well.

I think it was Houston Jones. Not only could Arnaud not re-enter, we had too many in the huddle...

    Re: AA illegal substitution penalty

I'd like to hear an explantion of what happened, and then what the coaches have to say about it. I couldn't believe that occured. Yet another in a pretty long list this season of "WTF are they doing?!?!"

However, if he's down and attended to, don't we have option of calling a timeout to keep him on the field?

    Re: AA illegal substitution penalty

I think that was the problem (AA needing to sit out a play) - I don't recall seeing the training staff take the field - but I think it was because we had too many in the huddle. Not sure - was somewhat of a mess and everyone was a bit confused.

Someone was out there attending to him. Assume it was the training staff. Then Chizik came out too, IIRC.

    Hmmm, I don't recall that.

I think we should ask Donovan McNabb - he seems to be an expert on football rules...

    Re: AA illegal substitution penalty

The trainers and GC did come out on the field. I figured ISU had taken a timeout when AA went back on the field......then the other player ran off and the penalty was called. Just another frustration.

Yup, coaches & staff were on the field. A timeout would have solved the problem.

It could have been called for multiple things on that play probably. 12 man huddle. AA not leaving the field after an injury that stopped play.

This is another one of those instances that shows me not only do we need some growth from our players, but we also need it from our coaching staff. I hope they are learning from their mistakes, but I've seen a lot of them this year. And from a coaching staff that preaches, "We're not good enough to make mistakes." I get quite upset at the coaching mistakes. I know it's a learning process, but all of these guys have been around college football long enough. It's not like we pulled them out of the Pop Warner leagues or something. I knew it myself while watching the game. I was screaming, "Get AA out of there." These are things that are going to have to change soon. You live and die by your coaches. IF they are having trouble figuring out what's going on. How can we expect our players to know what's happening?

Don't take this as a "Fire Chizik" post, it's not at all. But, these are some of the basics of college football. They need to look at these mistakes and learn from them, we can't continue to do dumb things in big games.

    Re: AA illegal substitution penalty

The staff was definately on the field ... it was a really silly penalty, everybody in the stadium knew AA needed to be out a play - except him.

I'm assuming here that the coaching staff just overlooked that he stayed out there and assumed he was on the sidelines ... AND that AA was just confused because we was flustered by the injury.

With no real backup QB this is a situation that should have been discussed at length in practice one would hope.

Funny thing is, I never really thought about it in that perspective. I still think the coaches should have been paying better attention, but AA really proved to me he is a gamer. It's almost like leaving the game, no matter what the reason, is not an option for him.

I think the coaches were, but AA went out there on his own. He seemed to just run out there without any word from the coaches.

Yup. The play was called and he went to his position.
