    Re: Obama wants a Playoff

I disagree with Obama. I for one like the current system, although, I could see a 4 team system where the 4 major BCS bowls are semifinal games and then a national title game is played from there.

    Re: Obama wants a Playoff

I can't wait to hear the screams from the non-BCS conferences when their undefeated and 1 loss teams don't make a playoff.

And at the end of the day, Obama really doesn't have a whole lot of influence over it anyway.

    Re: Obama wants a Playoff

I saw this on 60 Minutes last night...he wants an 8 team playoff and says he plans to "throw his weight around" to make it happen.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

    Re: Obama wants a Playoff

i think you mean 8 team system. I would be down for a 16 team playoff, becasue then any "legitimate" contender would be in.

I wouldn't be so certain. Look at the major advertisers on CFB...financial service firms, auto makers, and drug companies...all have become or are in the process of becoming controlled by the government (financial service firms...bailout, auto makers...pending bailout, drug companies...medicare Rx program).

    Re: Obama wants a Playoff

I'm so tired of hearing about playoffs.

It won't solve anything in D1 football.

Unless you only allow conf champions, or something - and I don't see the conferences going for that.

Make it 4, 8 or 16 teams. We could poll for who thinks what teams make the playoffs and we'd get 1000 different answers. Not much different than today.

Are you sure he doesn't want to give everyone a trophy in the interest of fairness?

    Re: Obama wants a Playoff

    A few things...

    1) This is old news. I think I first heard this the day after the election.

    2) If anybody seriously thinks the president is going to "throw his weight around" to get a playoff in college football, you're either crazy or trying to start trouble. (I can think of a few people around here who are at least one or the other.)

    3) Obama doesn't strike me as the college football fan-type. That's what surprised me the most when I first heard about this.

    Re: Obama wants a Playoff

I really thought he was kind of kidding when he said that in his interview. It absolutely is not his call and he should not be able to throw any weight around to change it either.

If they do go to playoff, which I would like, you would have problems as well with teams not making the cut, whether that's 8 or 16 teams. You will never be able to please everyone.

Exactly! If they go with 4 teams, then how do we know a 5th or 6th place team isn't really better than the 4th place team? It goes on for 8 and 16 team formats as well! Although the NCAA might like the discussion that would create across the country as the final weeks of the season tick down?

Health care is way different than sports. The FDA, not to mention medicare and medicaid, give the government a whole bunch of influence there. Detroit is begging at the doorstep for money, which would of course come with some strings attached. Financial companies, likewise. The ones being bailed out are coming to the government asking for money.

The NFL/MLB/NHL/NBA all probably have more gov't influence (thanks to unionization of the players) than the NCAA, and BCS football programs in particular.

The people with the most vested interest in there NOT being a playoff (the BCS conferences) aren't likely to go looking for anything from the government other than to be left alone. Unless they have a need the government could fill, I don't see them doing so either. Conferences, as of late, have been signing insane deals and creating their own TV networks. I don't think anyone is hurting for anything the gov't can offer them at the moment.
