    Season projections

I don't mind saying I'm a little geeked up about the season this year based on several points. Cyclone fans have had little to get excited about with either shaped ball the past few years, but this may be different. We definitely need a shot in the arm.

Hilton Magic - There are a lot of opinions on what creates Hilton Magic. I think it works best when our team either shoots three balls well or runs the floor with dunk potential. Those events follow with the crowd going bonkers while we're on defense. We're going to shoot the three better than we have in a looong time. Our recent teams have been somewhat boring, sorry to say. This team looks different.

Tournament hopes - Now I'm not talking another elite eight team here but considering our start and projected schedule we could enter the conference season with 11 wins, and that's considering we lose three non-conference games. All the games are winnable, but our youth will likely nip us at some point. Kansas lost a ton of players and K-State is now without Beasley. The North is certainly not the strongest of the two divisions if we can take advantage of that. We play defense well and shoot the three, a winning recipe. Look at Drake last year. NIT, you bet. NCAA a bit less than a coin flip, but at least this year we might have a quarter to play with.

Winning our first three games, over a three day period, against better teams each night is very encouraging. We would have found a way to lose at least one of these games last year. Held our opponents to 33.5% shooting.

I still don't think we will be a 20 win team.
Would love to be wrong, but I think our young team is going to start to wear down in the conference games.

This team is further or last years team. A winning record would be great.

I'm enjoying watching these guys play. After the last 5 years of basketball, I'm enjoying EVERY win.

We will probably be competitive in the games where our shots are falling and look awful in the games that we struggle shooting 3s. We're going to live and die by it.

Great lookout on the season! Just really solid stuff there.

NHL teams need to be added to the favorite teams section.

Considering how many young kids we're playing, I would take in the upper teens and a NIT berth. Followed by a year or two of getting even better.

That kid from Ames would be a nice addition to put it over the top too in those years. Hopefully we make enough improvement to keep us on his radar.

    Re: Season projections

IMO, we have to show signs of improvement this year - in the win column. Not only for the program/fans - but to have a shot at getting a certain local recruit.

How we do in the non-conference schedule is absolutely critical.

Luckily, it looks like we have more than one option in that department and aren't depending on one person. They likely won't all go cold at the same time.

I think they will get better as the year goes on and grow as a team. There seem to be some good young players something that has been lacking. Put them with solid Srs and you never know what will happen. A non conference sweep is possable and then conference, who knows 8-8. Past problems seem to be getting fixed. Go WL the sch there are a lot of toss up games IMO.

    Re: Season projections

Looking at the conference I think we have a very good chance at the tournament this year. Texas and Oklahoma may be the creme of the crop, but I think both of these teams are very beatable. Wouldn't be surprised to see a team come out of no where and take the conference. Kinda remember a couple Cyclone teams pulling this off a few years back.

    Re: Season projections

Non conference road games will make a big difference come end of the season.

    at Hawaii
    at UNI
    at Iowa

We have to pull a COUPLE of those games out.

    Re: Season projections

I still don't think it will come to that point but our nonconference schedule will probably hurt our RPI quite a bit if we're a bubble team. I'd be ecstatic with NIT.

The scariest thing about jumpshooting teams is they tend to fade at the end of the year when the legs get tired...
