ISU Bball team is doing very well for what we have!

People need to really put things in perspective with the ISU basketball team. McDermott had to work his *** off in the first couple of months to get some guys in here to even field a team. Not many coaches in America could have sustained the losses that ISU did from last year and even be competitive. Remember ISU had a chance to win at UNI, a team that will be in the tourney this year. Losing to Drake is not the end of the world. This team will only get better, we will win 5-7 games in the Big 12. Help is definitely on the way for next year also. What McDermott inherited was as close as you can get to taking over a program that was given the death penalty. Patience is going to pay off for ISU fans as soon as next season.

If Drake plays like that the rest of the season, they can beat alot of teams. I thought they looked better than UNI personally.

Yep, Drake is no slouch. I don't get some people on here who were saying "Come on, it's Drake for goodness sake!" Drake almost always plays ISU tight (even though we've won most of them) so it isn't surprising that they won. Everyone should accept the fact that pretty much every game is going to be a toss-up game this year...we'll look really good and also look pretty bad.

Drake finished with an RPI of like 120 something last year out of over 350 D-1 teams. Dr. Tom has done a great job of rebuilding Drake and making them competitive again. They play in a tough conference. I think they sent more teams to the "Dance" last year than the B12. They have been improving year after year. Alou Kiata (sp) is a big boy and the tall, skinny forward is a very good slasher. Good luck to them the rest of the year. As for us, its gonna be some struggles. We will be better off in the long run with McD though. I hope we can click in the second half of the season though.

Once again lets just remember that our elite 8 team of fizer and tinsley almost lost to morningside college. Not to bash morningside, but just an example of how we understimate smaller schools.

This year is going to be a tough one for GMac.

If you're looking for an "end of the world" game, that might come on 12/31 against NDSU, who knocked off #8/9 Marquette in Milwaukee this weekend. Actually, it could come in any of the games before that one as well. Without a post game, the outside shooting can go cold anytime, and turn a "sure" victory into a loss.

This team will have to improve drastically to win 5-7 Big 12 games. Such improvement can certainly happen, but in my experience, it doesn't seem probable that JC transfers, juniors and seniors are going to improve significantly during the season. The Clones do have a couple of freshman that could make such improvement.

Right now, it looks like ISU has no post game, and that pretty much precludes any success in the Big 12. There's still time for somebody to gut it up and try to play the post like it should be played before the conference season starts. Otherwise, ISU will probably get hot enough from 3-pt land to win a couple of conference games, but I wouldn't count on more than that without some semblance of a post game.

The good news is we won't see another team this year that resembles what Drake does. Drake looked like a team in end-of-season form, but that was because our defense was pretty limp for most of the game. Like one of the players said, if we'd guarded them the whole game like we did the last few minutes, it wouldn't have been close. That was my biggest disappointment that we couldn't stay in front of the ballhandler and get him stopped.

Don't forget: the Big 12 is really down this year, especially the North. Kansas is by far the best North team, and they've lost to Oral Roberts and DePaul.

Missouri is probably second best, but they have a new coach and a new lineup.

Nebraska, K-State and Colorado are all horrible.

The south is a little better, but only A&M has impressed me so far.

That's why I think this team has a chance to win 6 or 7 big 12 games.

I agree, the conference has looked weak so far...that could mean we might weasel our way into a finish somewhere in the 6th-10th place range.

The rest of the Big 12 North might be down, but it's more a question of whether ISU has a squad that can complete at the Big 12 level in the first place. The recently completed 1-7 FB season comes to mind...

I will go a step further. That team actually lost to Drake. The same year we went to the elite 8.

Ahhh...let's not get carried away here...That particular team had Marcus Fizer (and also Paul Shirley) down in the post. I don't exactly see anybody on the present team playing the post who will be walking into the NBA any time soon. Like I said before, without a post game, the conference season is going to be rather unpleasant.

Re: ISU Bball team is doing very well for what we have!

I think we'll have to get by using some "small ball" at times like we did against Drake where Wesley Johnson and Clark were the only 2 "post" players in the game. We made our run once we pulled Gray and Hubalek from the lineup. Then towards the end GMac inserted them at key times when we needed defense (Gray) or post offense (Jiri but he didn't get in but a couple possesions really.) I think our guards can go head-to-head with about anyone and that 3 gaurd lineup with Clark and Wesley roaming around created some mis-matches I thought. We didn't have a true post player in the game so we stretched the defense and the guards started to attack the lane more with Drake's big guys having to come out to guard the perimeter more.
