    Ordering online vs. buying retail

I'm a buy-it-online type of guy. I don't need to touch every product I buy before spending the money on it. Yet in some cases, I do want to see what I'm getting before I buy it.

Yesterday, I bought a pair of speakers that we sorely needed. I was misusing my receiver, relegating it to a glorified splitter instead of using it for what it really was designed for. So, I went to Best Buy to look at some speakers I had taken a look at online.

At the store, I found a pair that I liked for $660 + tax. Klipsch brand, highly recommend them from the demo I saw compared to the other demos.

Anyways, I left the store without buying because I needed to look at the specs of my receiver again to make sure I had a good speaker set. And, I wondered if I could get them cheaper online.

To no surprise, I could. What was even more interesting, I bought them on Best Buy's website for $100 cheaper. Yes, on their very own website for $100 less. But, the shipping you say - that will eat up that cost difference.

    Nope. Why not?

    I selected "in store pick-up" instead - costing $0.00.

Yesterday I went into the store to look at the speakers. Last night I paid for them online. Today I will go back to the store on my way hope to pick them up.

    Savings = $100.

Just wanted to share that with the fellow CF'ers.

Save your dollars by making purchases online. Split your savings - giving half back to yourself and half to ISU.

Two websites that you may enjoy for similar things like this ISUfan is www. slickdeals.net and www.spoofee.com. It is a site for bargains and for people who like to find where something can be had for cheaper.

Re: Ordering online vs. buying retail

Be careful buying something from Best Buy if you're not 100% sure first, though. I purchased a digital camera there and was not allowed to return it because there is a 14 day limit on returns. Unfortunately, I was in out of town for 3 weeks on business while this period was busy expiring. Also, there is a 15% restocking fee if you open the box, which is the first thing I did to verify the contents.

Sidenote: Anyone interested in a Canon Elph SD600? Very nice camera; even nicer than the SD450 I received as a gift when I got home. PM me for details.

Yeah well, ya know, that's just, like uh, your opinion, man.

Re: Ordering online vs. buying retail

I did look at other sites like the ones you mentioned cy st8t. It was ironic, but it was one of those types of sites that led me to www.bestbuy.com.

And I'm no fan of buying stuff other than DVD's/accessories/etc at Best Buy - but in this case - I really couldn't pass it up.

Plus, Klipsch carries their own 5 year warranty on the product. I'll take that "risk". :)

Re: Ordering online vs. buying retail

When it comes to electronics I usually like to search online before I buy because there are always better deals somewhere. I've bought a lot of new or new-near things on Ebay for much less. www.gotapex.com usually posts good deals on electronics and www.pricewatch.com is a good place to look for PC hardware deals.

Re: Ordering online vs. buying retail

You find find the same examples at Staples. Also, you may run into other retaliers which have "on-line" specials. As you did, I bought on-line and picked up at the store.

I purchased my toyota highlander (6,000 miles on SUV)on-line from a Lexus dealership in Palm Beach. Payed 600 to have it shipped here. If I did not like it when it came, I just sign papers and walked away. I saved 3700 over local. When we replace my wifes car, it will be the first place I look. This was three years ago. I buy most everything on line - except for a good long island at O'Malleys.

So is it acceptable to buy Christmas gifts online? Particularly Ebay items? I was wondering about this a couple weeks ago and was wondering what people thought about that.

Yeah there are a lot of good price deal sites that I look at often. www.DealDetectives.com is a good one for electronics.

Re: Ordering online vs. buying retail

I've bought about half my Christmas items from Amazon.com.

But in my family, it's not so much a surprise what you're getting. Usually around Thanksgiving the phone calls, and e-mails go out "what do you want". Then it magically shows up a few weeks later all wrapped up.

    Minimal surprise.

    Another good site is www.cheapstingybargains.com

I bought a car online without seeing it. I did hire a company to test drive it first. Saved about $5000 rather than buying it here at a dealership!

Online is the way to go.

Re: Ordering online vs. buying retail

    Two thoughts

    1. Best Buy will price match with their own site. All you need to do is tell them it is whatever price on their site and they will look it up and give you that price.

    2. A few years ago I bought a digital camcorder from sears the retail price was something like $500 and I got it for $330. I just searched for it online and found a site that had it cheap. Sears did a price match with the other website plus shipping charges. So I got the camera from Sears for the same cheap price online.

Re: Ordering online vs. buying retail

I've done the same at Circuit City. If you tell them the online price, they usually match it in the store unless the website says "web only" deal. However, once, the website said it was no longer in stock on a "web only" deal and I went to the store and found it on the shelf and they gave me the web only price.

Just because I read lots of etiquette stuff when organizing my wedding... here's what the etiquette books would say:

Buying a gift online is perfectly acceptable. In fact, some stores (the Gap, for example) will even ask if you want them to box up the gift, include a message, and mail it to the recipient for you.

The Ebay part, however, is a little more shady. So many sellers say that an item is brand-new, in-package, etc. If you've worked with a seller before and know that their stuff really IS all of that, it's probably okay (still a little iffy, but okay). If it's someone you've never worked with before, I'd shy away.
