    Jamie Vanderbeken

I get the impression that a lot of people thought that Jamie, at 6-11, wasn't going to be much more than Jiri when he first arrived--stand around outside and shoot threes. However, listening to the game, I got the impression that he was far more active on interior defense, and did a good job rebounding.

Anyone at the game have any further insight?

    Re: Jamie Vanderbeken

He moved around alot better than I thought, very smooth. He plays like he's 6'7" in a 6'11" body. He won't be as physical as Jiri (I don't care what some of you say, Jiri did play tough) but he is better with the ball in his hands away from the rim. Jiri was better with his back to the basket.

    Re: Jamie Vanderbeken

He has better court vision than I thought. Much more polished than I thought he'd be. He stepped in and acted like he belonged there.

When he got that rebound at the end, and wrapped it up, the man knew he was getting fouled, and had important free throws to make. He didn't look to get rid of the ball, he took his foul, and went right down to the free throw line. He knew he was making those free throws to ice the win.

Calm, cool, and collected. His confidence had to rub off on the other guys. His and Eikmeier's, who just hates to lose.

just looking at stats, it seems he does have good court vision as only DG and sean had more assits.

    Re: Jamie Vanderbeken

I was very impressed with Vanderbeken. I really felt like we could win if the ball was in his or Eik's hands at the end of the game. He brought his A game last night. Seems like one of those guys who wants the ball in his hands when the pressure is on. I will be very surprised if this game was a fluke. I think we'll see a lot from him this season.

Also, he gives a great post-game interview. Sounds like a real dude.

Remember the Clone Zone video where mac was asking the guys in practice if winning mattered to anybody?

Well, it matters a lot to two of our newcomers!
    That's a good thing!

The NCAA not clearing him for Iowa was a good thing for ISU. Should we thank them for that? If Wes and JVB are willing to take over and help win games this earily in their days at ISU that is a great thing. These 2 maybe the true leaders of the team come Big 12 if they keep this up. It has been a few years since ISU has had a true leader. Homan was probly the last one.

I was impressed. I was also impressed with Thompson's contribution on O.

The guard play, especially our inability to recognize, identify and guard perimeter shooters, concerns me. Hopefully Lucca and Garrett will step up there.

Overall I am not going to climb on any walls to jump off just yet.

I remember similar discussions in 2000 when we went to Drake and stunk the place up (not that this team has that kind of potential, just an analogy)

    Re: Jamie Vanderbeken

I guess I am old school. Big guys like that should be down low rebounding (although he did have ten). When he is out shooting threes that leaves Craig or Alex alone. No offense but if they are relying on those two for our rebounds they are going to get out rebounded a lot.

At times, Alex showed more promise down low than he gets credit for. At others, probably less.

He's slimmer than last year, and that's gotta help. (Maybe I shouldn't type slimmer right before lunch!) That breakaway would've been awesome, if only he hadn't fumbled it away.

I was very encouraged by both AT and JVB. JVB showed more on defense than I expected, and AT gave us a couple of nice baskets.

I started calling him Air Canada after that block on the attempted dunk, he came out of nowhere.

    Re: Jamie Vanderbeken

I thought JVB was a total different player than JVB. Seems much more athletic, smart with the ball, great rebounder, and great all around offensively.

He has had a couple really sweet blocks in the last couple games to on help D.
