Was it a "spirited comeback" or are we bad?

I noticed that UC-Davis was 1-15 on the road last year. Was tonight's win the kind showed a lot of guts and potential, or were we getting whipped at Hilton by a bad team and pulled our head out in the nick of time? I was unable to go or listen, so I don't really know how we actually looked. My gut tells me that we're just bad, but my heart wants to believe the former.

In 1984, I was hospitalized for approaching perfection.

Don't get down yet, it's the first game.

I think jitters and excitement played a role in some rough shooting. The team looks better than last year, I think.

Keep the faith on this team!

Kentucky lost to VMI at home yesterday. Have you even heard of VMI? I hadn't.

    Yes, but never for winning!

I've heard of a lot of schools only through college basketball.

They beat Duke in the NCAA Tourney a few years ago.

    I think?

Regardless, that was a horrible loss for them.

ISU fans knew that this was going to be a growing year. A win is a win, and that's what this team needs IMO. There are going to be some bad losses - but there will probably be some good wins too. Iowa and ISU are very similar in that aspect.

It's tough to gauge a team on the first game of the season - UC Davis played really tough, and obviously ISU didn't play all that well. But the players and coaches are there. Unfortunately, with so many fresh faces, ya gotta be patient.

1st game. I've been through about 30 years of early games, and have learned enough to know that they mean very little as a preview to the rest of the season.

No, no, no, no, no....that was VCU, Virginia Commonwealth University, a very good "mid-major" program. But regardless, I had to smile when I saw that Kentucky lost. If everything we heard about Gillespie tampering with that guy who used to play for us is true, then I hope Kentucky never wins another single basketball game again.

We did not look good. Not even close to good! I am afraid it is going to be a long season.

I wouldnt say you are 'bad' What is 'bad'?

9, 10 wins? Yes, that is bad. this team will have more wins than that. I think this team will win 15 or more games. An average team without Wesley Johnson? Yes, I think perhaps it's an average team.

But let's touch base on this again in February. It's far too early to make any judgement.

To me, a 1-point win in November over Nobody Tech is a good win.

    [quote=mjones34;722187]Win is a win.

Come on. I think we all know better than that. This team needs to improve quickly. Last night was ruff. But, they did not quit. Which I thought was huge. Down by 14 and gut out a win. Some body really needs to show Craig how to play defense. Wes was huge. Vanderbeken was soild, but boy get your butt down low and stop shooting so many three's.

Re: Was it a "spirited comeback" or are we bad?

Oh,gee. We were playing our first game. Cal Davis played four games in Europe at the end of August, after school started, so they could use their new players. Craig Brackins was trying to hard, and in foul trouble from the first possession. Lucca Staiger, generally considered our second best player, is still working back into shape from knee surgery. UC-D might have been 9-22 last season, but they were second in the nation in free throw percentage, have four returning starters, and four over 6-7. We're still working in...what, four new players in the playing rotation? Eikmeier, Vanderbeken, (a hobbled) Staiger, Dominique Buckley...and Justin Hamilton didn't play much, because UCG's inside guys were essentially 6-7 small forwards?

    We won.

Positives? I'm guessing we saw more out of Alex Thompson than most people expected. Jamie Vanderbeken, too--especially his rebounding and defense. Wes Eikmeier was scrappy. Dominique Buckley was a spark. At times the team gelled, and went on runs.

It's the first game. I'm happy for now.

    Bring on...whoever.

Re: Was it a "spirited comeback" or are we bad?

I think it is a bit of both. The bad shooting was only a small piece of what was going on. Sure, Brackins got in trouble, but with the guy he was guarding, there was no excuse for that. Bigger, faster guys will take it right to him, knowing we can't play without him. Without Brackins in the guys looked clueless. Only JVB and Wes had any desire to attempt to score.

The comeback was great, but there is no way ANY big 12 team should have been in that position...

Welcome to college basketball. Happens all the time. Just ask Kentucky fans.

W had our open shots, plenty of them, and the team just has to get through the jitters.

There's a lot more hope there than the negative folks are willing to see.
