Played like crap, or shot like crap?

I see a lot of posts about how we played poorly. Personally, I think we played a decent game, considering all of the variables, but we shot poorly for most of it. Anyone who has picked up a basketball should know the difference. You can play with smarts and hustle, and at the same time, your shot may not be falling.

We shot poorly for a HUGE chunk of the game tonight, but I do not expect that to be the norm with this team. Given the outcome, I was encouraged by what I saw tonight knowing the potential that exists with this team.

Yes we did shoot poorly. Whatever offensive sets we are running don't seem to be working. It's a lot of standing around and waiting until 5 seconds left on the shot clock to do something.

We had a lot of open looks from outside that weren't falling. We also had a pretty bad case of the butterfingers.

Winning a game like that is really going to boost their confidence.

Re: Played like crap, or shot like crap?

poor shots were a direct result of the lack of offense we have. Our team has trouble powering the ball inside the paint. Some poor choices from for 3-pointers were also made. Haluska shot a couple quick, of-balance shots from outside. Brackins shot a three, when he should be focused on controlling the paint. Our free throw shooting was terrible. We rebounded well, and the team seems to react very well to the crowd. I think we have a lot of new guys on the team that need time to adjust and grow. We won't be a good team this year, but the team will learn a lot and hopefully stay together for next year.

In the second half it seemed like we were trying to get Brackins going which meant the other guys di a lot of standing around. I think McD knew that Craig should have had his way tonight and maybe we were forcing the issue a bit. When we got and and ran we scored the majority of our points. I don't think that is our key to winning games because we are not gong to be able to outrun teams, but we need to pick and choose our times to run and take advantae of that.

Re: Played like crap, or shot like crap?

There was a lot more movement without the ball and much more penetration(esp. Diante) than last year. We had a lot of solid, open shots that just didn't fall. Maybe guys weren't releasing shots that well in the excitement of the first game (Lucca and first-half Eik), or just put too much ooomph on it.

They moved a lot more. I saw screens set for teammates for the second straight game. I don't remember a lot of that last year.

Very rarely did the shot clock get down below 10 seconds. They're looking for good shots earlier, and have guys that can do a better job of getting open.

I think the team will be OK. They're playing a more team-oriented game this year, and, as the post-game interviews suggested, they communicate while on the court.

Looking at the bright side, I'd call this a game to work some kinks out. We're probably not a NC-caliber team yet, but we're gonna get some people. As someone in one of these threads pointed out, with this many shooters, they won't all be cold like the first 30 minutes of last night very often.

I expect the guys will shoot better today against Loyola-Marymount. They're too tired to be that excited

There were a lot of defensive breakdowns in the second half that resulted in uncontested 3s and easy layups.

Coach addressed this on the post-game show. It won't be long before the guys recognize that stuff at game speed.

The standing around has nothing to do with the plays. There is always something you could be doing to help.

We never get any easy shots. The only open shots we had were three point attemts when the doubled Brackins and even those were few and far between. UC Davis had a bunch of wide open layups on back cuts and back screens. We had one decent cut to the basket the whole game and that was Buckley.

I know it was only one game but I feel that Wes should be seeing at least 25-30 minutes on the floor each night. We need that sweet shot of his in the lineup.

I'm not going to make any sweeping generalizations about the team from one game... however I have no idea how people could not be massively concerned based on that game last night. It wasn't just the bad shooting - there were defensive breakdowns all over the place, there was a complete lack of offense, etc. If Brackins gets in foul trouble, which he has been prone to do, the team absolutely shut down. That concerns me.

Re: Played like crap, or shot like crap?

Without Brackins, we had the five-point halftime lead. They didn't shut down.

One game doesn't make a trend. It's a snapshot that wasn't real pretty, but it was a real win. The defense wasn't that broken, except for the run that built the 14-point lead. People moved more than last year, we had actual screens, and we have more quickness and aggressiveness than we showed last year.

It's one game, and it's really not that bad. How can we meltdown after just one game?

Re: Played like crap, or shot like crap?

Like I said in the game thread, the worst thing to come from the game was the lack of leadership from Diante and Brackins, our self proclaimed leaders. When things got tough, they hung their heads and slumped their shoulders, and didn't say a word. Anyone AT the game could see this...
