Can we have higher premiums for smokers and obese people?

And while we're at it, how about dumb *****? If you have a low IQ, pay more. If you have blond hair, pay more. If you think highly of yourself (you're better than everyone else), pay more because you're worth more.

I have a friend in the insurance biz. According to him, no one can have higher premiums based on lifestyle, you can only give discounts to those who follow healthier lifestyles. I didn't read the article, but instead of going after meat eaters and being controversial, why not do some good and represent veggies and go for discounts.

Plus, you can't single out one form of lifestyle and not expect them to figure in on all of them. Do you tailgate? Oh your chances of drunk driving are significantly higher. So, higher rates for you, and that alcohol, since most binge drink at tailgates, higher rates for that as well. Basically what it leads to is the ability to offer discounts just like they do now. Smokers only pay higher rates now because non-smokers get a discount.

On the obese thing, I would argue I live a healthier lifestyle than most people half my weight. I exercise every day, lift weights, eat very little meat in general yet according to any body mass index figure you get, I'm obese. So of course I'm going to argue against anyone raising insurance premiums based on any kind of index numbers.

What is the difference between discounts for some and higher premiums for others?

I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone.

Playing a little devil's advocate here, but there is a strong argument I've heard (at least for smokers) that if you compare the health costs over the lifetime of an average smoker and an average non-smoker, the costs are actually more for the non-smoker. This is because smokers live shorter lives and will often die to smoking-related complications, whereas your average "healthy" person will eventually have lots of health problems not due to lifestyle, but simply old age.

Just think if you're healthy and live to be 90, you probably visit the doctor more times in that last 30 years than a smoker who dies at 60 would over their lifetime.
