    BCS games to ESPN??

ESPN - Reports: ESPN bidding on Bowl Championship Series TV deal

I don't have cable or dish, so personally I think it would stink for these games not to be broadcast OTA. Wouldn't this be the only major national sports "championship", not broadcast OTA? Hec, even the NASCAR "Chase" is on an OTA broadcast network ...

It would just allow ABC/ESPN/ESPNU/DEUCE/OCHO to divide up the games and in any given year stick what they deem most desirable on ABC for a national audience and put whatever other games they don't deem as desirable on the cable channels so as not to postpone Dancing with the Stars.

    Re: BCS games to ESPN??

Seems whacky to spend $125 million per year for the games, and then bury them on (obscure) cable networks...but I guess that's why I'm not a broadcasting exec. Of course, they can always ask for a bailout if it goes bad...

According to the article in USA Today, this would not be the case. They indicate that this would be the first major national championship game carried on cable, not on network TV.

Well, as someone whose parents don't have satellite/cable and will be home for the Holidays.... that sucks.

    ESPN isn't exactly "obscure."

I thought the NFL was crazy for putting Monday Night Football on cable, but it's worked out pretty well. I don't necessarily like the idea of BCS games being on a non-OTA channel, but times are changing.

Personally, I'd be in favor of it. I just think it's wierd for the games to be on FOX right now. They don't show ANY regular season college football games, but then they get the biggest games of the season? I don't like that.

I think that is pretty rediculous as well. That just doesn't make any sense, not to mention the broadcast and announcers are terrible.

I don't see any problem with it being on ESPN. What's the big deal? Who doesn't have ESPN? For those of you who said you dont have dish or cable, get rid of the friggin rabbit ears and step into the new mellenium for god's sake.

Well, I don't have ESPN, nor do I ever intend to get it, unless my cable company bundles it free of charge with my cable internet. Apparently, neither do alot of other people. At least in this market, whenever the Dallas Cowboys are on MNF or another non-OTA broadcast (preseason and regular season games), an arrangement is always made with a local station to broadcast the games OTA. I'm sure the Cowboys wouldn't make arrangement to do that if everybody had ESPN.

And by the way, "rabbit ears" presently give you the highest quality HD signal, since dish and cable compress the crap out of HD before they transmit it (unless you have FIOS or other similar technology).

Anyway, looks like it is pretty much a done deal.

ESPN - Fox Sports pulls out of bidding to show BCS games

The BCS gets a bunch of money, and I suppose ESPN can always stick the BCS games on ABC if they can't generate enough ad revenue for the ESPN-only broadcast.

I didn't know it was possible to not have Cable or Sat at this point. I can't imagine not having ESPN

If I were the BCS, I would stipulate that ESPN must put the games on ABC and also provide a free webcast on espn360.

As do mine. I probably won't be there when the BCS games are playing at least. That would suck though, not being able to see MNF or BCS games though because they are on cable.
