What is the biggest bowl we reach by 2012?

The biggest bowl Chizik will reach during the length of his original contract. Not necessarily his first bowl, but the biggest:

Gene Smith, 1993-2000. 7 years, 6 NCAA's, 1 bowl game. Revenue sports postseason participation 50%. Good.
    Bruce Vandevelde, 2000-20005. 5 years, 4 bowl games, 2 NCAA's, 2 NIT's. Postseason participation 80%. Better.
    Jamie Pollard, 2005-. 4 years. 1 bowl game, 0 NCAA's, 0 NIT's. Postseason participation: 13%. The next big step.

My ignore list: splitidentity, tarheelhawk, superdorf, clones_jer. That is all.

Re: What is the biggest bowl we reach by 2012?

I don't think we will go to a major bowl until we are in a major bowl.

I understand that daydreaming is therapeutic in times such as this, but I am not going to speculate, fantasize or prognosticate about bowl games until we have a bowl invitation in hand.

We've got two more games to play, and I'm not going to throw in the towel here and start to distance myself here from a disastrous season by dreaming about ISU in the Fiesta Bowl four years from now.

Look at the schedules between now and then.... we won't be in a major bowl by 2012. Let's stay realistic, no melt downs here when we're not in the top 25 by 2012

Since 60+ teams go to bowl games every year, we don't have to be in the top 25 or even the top 50 to make a bowl. Going 3-1 in the nonconference and .500 in the conference easily gets us to a bowl. Not a major bowl, but even the mid-level Big 12 bowls are pretty good. Realistically, we're not too far away from that. I am expecting at least one, maybe two bowls of Insight or Alamo level by 2011 or 2012....or hopefully a Holiday Bowl. Of course the Big 12 bowl agreements could change by then as well.

I said the Holliday Bowl just because San Diego is still warm in the Winter.

If the B12 plays in the Motor City, that is as good as it will get.

I hate to say it or be pessimistic but when you couch it in those terms...YOU COULD BE RITE!!!

I miss the excitement and discussions of "where will we go" at the beginning of December. I miss planning bowl trips and going with friends.

Here's hoping we get back somewhere very soon.

Re: What is the biggest bowl we reach by 2012?

I hate to say it but I think our only year to be potentially bowl eligible is next year. After that, Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma are all back on the schedule.

Eventually also, we'll have to start realizing that Colorado and Nebraska will be good again and we have them every year.

    Hate to be the pessimist!

I'm not so sure we should be worried about which bowl at this point but when and how many bowls before then should be our first goal.

I greatly dislike the assumption that just because Texas, Oklahoma, and Texas Tech are on our schedule that we won't have a successful season. For one thing, those teams account for only 3 games out of 12, meaning there is no reason for not winning 6-7 of those remaining 9. For another, this is exactly the kind of attitude that Chizik wants to change. We automatically assume those games will be losses (and, to be fair, we don't historically have any reason to expect them to be otherwise). But that attitude MUST change if we ever want to crawl out of mediocrity.

If we are going to go to a bowl game, I would rather we do it with those three teams on our schedule than without. Yes, I hope we go to a bowl game next year, but I hope we go to a better bowl in 2010 with a win over at least one of those three great teams.
