    Offensive play calling...

It sounds like I'll be the minority, and I'll probably get blasted, but imo the offensive play calling was solid up to the final play (which was an awful call). A very big thing was the fact that we ADJUSTED our game plan and took what CU gave us. Due to their stout secondary, we were unable to get a ton of separation early w/our wide receivers, so we started running screens and draws, which eventually softened them up, and allowed us to open up the passing game some. Our offense moved the ball most of the game, countering our defensive let down. It seemed last year our defense kept us in games, but the offense lost them. This year it's the other way around. I've felt that the offensive play calling has really improved since the Nebraska game, although the defense is still god-awful. I don't see a need to fire McFarland, and institute a new offense next year, especially with everyone returning. The call at the end was dumb, and lost the game, but the play had been working. As far as an entire game plan went, it was a well called game, and despite what some on this board think, the offensive play calling made obvious and successful in-game adjustments.

In 1984, I was hospitalized for approaching perfection.

Offensive play calling has been good for the most part IMO. No complaints here.

    Re: Offensive play calling...

Offensive play calling in general wasn't that bad. I wouldn't call it great, but we were able to move the ball at times and score. Still vast room for improvement. Of course the last play call sucked.

    Re: Offensive play calling...

The only play call that I had a problem with yesterday was the option on the 1 yard line. Sorry but you want to get that 1 yard the quickest way you can. The Option was probably the 3rd worse play you could have called there outside of a hail mary and flea flicker.

It's better than it was against, say, Baylor - that much is clear. I'm not sure it was good though. We're still not utilizing the TE enough, IMO. Nor are we making any real attempt to stretch the field.

    Re: Offensive play calling...

I would have to agree the last play call wasn't the greatest. Why not run a qb sneak, or something up the middle. I know it wasn't entirely the exact situation, but it worked for alabama.

    Ditto.

As for the call at the one yard line, it was something that had been working all game--and they had no time to think about it. I liked the idea of a bootleg with a run/pss option myself.

Of course, I also think that Darius might have scored on that reception--and think that were he not 6-1 187 (as he won't be next season), he would have for sure. There were some bad spots.

This is true, but I'm wondering if there are still problems w/Arnaud's shoulder that aren't really public knowledge. Also, our guys weren't really getting enough separation yesterday to have a real shot at this.

Watch him throw, I really don't buy it as an excuse now. On many passes, he's absolutely rocketing the ball in there. In some cases, too hard. The guys on Versus commented on that yesterday and they have not been the first.

No, he can throw it down field. We're just not doing it.

    Re: Offensive play calling...

I wondered right away if that option call at the end yesterday was a halfback pass. I highly doubt that was the case watching it again since no one was in routes, but boy would that have been a ballsy call.

Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating.

W/Mizzou's D being a bit suspect, I hope we see that next week, then. I still don't think the deep ball would have been there at all yesterday, and the screens/draw strategy worked well. We didn't lose yesterday because of our offense. Our defense couldn't have stopped NIACC in the second the half...

Too bad he did not reverse his field. The worst that could have happened would have been a clip. Three or four extra laterals might have worked also.

We screwed up, we ran out of time to plan.

Did you happen to record the game? Go back and watch our receivers. They were in bump and run almost the whole game and we could note get off the line. Kind of tough to go deep when you can't get past the line clean...

I see receivers do it all the time. Apparently we're not there yet.

Exactly, they just aren't strong enough... Colorado was just daring us to go deep, we just couldn't get off the line, that will get better with more strength... Only discouraging thing is Summral struggled getting off the line too...
