Are these guys who you expected for the $1.5mm?

A losing coach from a D-IAA school is our OC. Our rumored DC is a guy who got fired from his DC position at a bad mid-major last year and spent this year out of football. When I heard we were paying $1.5mm for assistants I expected something a little better for our coordinators.

That being said, I would be pretty stoked if we got Major Applewhite. Don't know a whole lot about him, but he seems to have been successful at Rice and, if he is a personable guy, would have to be a great recruiting draw given his age and background.

that's good. second guess him already. When you're coach, we'll let you call the shots. When GC is coach, why don't you let him figure things out?

I guess maybe we could still get Ditka?

Re: Are these guys who you expected for the $1.5mm?

McFarland seems to be a pretty good OC from what I've read, especially just that being his position and not a head coach. With him at the helm as OC at SFA and UCF they had pretty good offensive numbers, more especially towards the pass. Bolt I am not so enthused about, although he has just been rumored and not confirmed. There have got to be some other coaches with a better resume than him that we can get. But with that said, I am willing to give Chizik the benefit of the doubt in hiring both good X's and O's and recruiting coaches.

Everything I have heard about McFarland seems to be pretty good, most fans seem to be sad to see him go and think he left the program better than he got it, this doesn't always show up in the record column and if we get Applewhite in addition I am pretty happy. As far as DC, I will trust Chizik to get whoever he wants in that position, more so than any of the other assistants. The most important quality for that person is to be able to work very well with GC and to compliment him in any weaker areas he has.

Re: Are these guys who you expected for the $1.5mm?

Just to throw a name that has nothing to do with the mix: Ron Tuner

I live 10 miles from the campus at the University of Illinois. Tuner had many correlations to Mac. Great guy. Always did the right thing. Was an all around class act. The major difference is there are a lot of people at Iowa State who want to win in Football. The majority of Illinois fans would rather call it a year and wait for basketball. At any rate, Tuner did not get it done as a head coach. After being forced out he was unemployed for all of about a week before becoming the OC for the Chicago Bears. The guy is a good coach, just didn't get it done at Illinois.

My point is we don't need to second guess ANYTHING, until we have seen the product in action.

McFarland's offenses have been quite prolific......what makes you more excited about Major Applewhite over this guy? Hmmmmm....less than 5 years coaching experience versus nearly 20.

Read this bio on McFarland and then tell us what you think.

Gene, said at the press conference that he told Dr. G and Jamie NOT to expect flashy asst. hires. He was going to go after guys he thought could do he job for him. When I hear someone class themself a CEO they should act like one when somebody is not getting the job done. I don't expect us to keep asst. that are not getting the job done like the previous staff was alleged to be doing.

Re: Are these guys who you expected for the $1.5mm?

I think that McFarland is a decent hire. Say Chizik brings in Applewhite at QB coach/passing game coordinator or something. That's a GREAT hire. One question, is McFarland going to coach a position too? Is he an OL coach?

Bolt (rumored) on the other hand at DC, I'm disappointed. With the money that ISU has to spend, they could probably pluck just about any DC from a MAC or Sunbelt team. They could grab a LB or DB coach from Texas or Auburn and make them DC. Chizik could even get a guy like Paul Rhoads or an up-and-comer like DeMontie Cross. I HOPE hiring Bolt is just a rumor.

I think if you looked at the staff of successful programs, you would find a lot of former head coaches. You can't tell a whole lot about a coach from a one page bio, and being a coach at a small school, unless you live around there, you probably wouldn't know much about him. Chizik worked with the guy, so he knows him, and I trust his judgement.

eric...he is the head coach at a school in the second year of rebuilding that by all accounts is ahead of schedule...as an OC at he....

During his stay at Central Florida, McFarland's offensive unit was ranked 11th in the nation in total offense and sixth in the nation in pass offense in 2002. The Knights averaged over 436 yards of offense and 32 points per game in 2002.

His offensive unit produced two 1,000-yard receivers and a 1,000-yard rusher in 2002, only the eighth time in NCAA history a team has accomplished that feat.

Central Florida finished ninth in the nation among I-A teams in passing offense in 2001 and was 12th in the nation in passing offense in 2000. During his stay in Orlando, McFarland coached six student-athletes that went on to the NFL.

Gene said they wouldn't be flashy but they would be guys that he knew could do the job. I will take that over a flashy name any day

Re: Are these guys who you expected for the $1.5mm?

The guy from SFA that has come on here and posted may have the best perspective

You guys have a great OC in McFarland. He is a great coach, and you guys are lucky to have him.
He dosnt really run the spread its more of a pro I. We ran the ball about 60 to 65% of the time this past year. He is an increadable O line coach and and even better recruiter. He didnt post up all that great of a recored for the past two years here because he had nothing to work with when he came in. But because of him in just two years we can easily win the southland conference next year. You guys have a great coach.Your very lucky. Good luck next year.
