USCellular goes EV-DO in Ames/Des Moines

For those of you who have USCellular phones in the Ames / Des Moines corridor, I can confirm that we now have EV-DO networking.

Only three markets have EV-DO, Milwaukee, Chicago and Des Moines.

    It is much, much faster.

As usual, welcome to state-of-5-years-ago technology, US Cellular customers.

Ok, I will ask. What is EV-DO and what does it do for me?

To you, it means faster (more capacity) wireless broadband internet, via either your phone or laptop.

Damn, I had an HTC touch for a week but returned it because the connection was too slow to be useful.

Re: USCellular goes EV-DO in Ames/Des Moines

I have looked at other carriers but since I've had my plan for so long there isn't anyone out there who can come close to it. It does suck that US Cellular is so far behind the technology curve, but if better phones/faster data was worth more money to me I'd switch, it's just not at this point.

WIMAX promises to be really, really awesome.

My big sticking point is that it still costs a bunch of money per device for data (and you can only use one device at a time), and the phones haven't caught up just yet when acting as tethered modems. Power consumption is still higher than I'd like, and things like placing a voice call while in a data session don't work as well as they should.
You pay the price of being an early adopter, I guess.

I'd kill for something along the lines of an iPhone, but with a keyboard and not made by Apple, with a built-in WIMAX/EV-DO Rev A/Wi-fi AP bridge, and bluetooth, possibly with built-in VPN capability, and of course with built-in GPS.

Yeah, and you also get what you pay for in terms of quality... I'll spend the extra dollars to get a network in Verizon where I have to look on the map to see where it DOESN'T work...
