Man, 73, scores 2 points in college hoops game

HARRIMAN, Tenn. Ken Mink, a 73-year-old full-time student, scored two points Monday night in Roane State Community College's 93-42 victory over King College's junior varsity. Mink entered the game with about 16 minutes left in the second half and attempted one shot in about three minutes. Seven minutes later, he went back in the game, was fouled and made two free throws.
"I found myself on the free-throw line 52 years after my last college game," Mink said. "I said, 'Just relax and shoot it like you know how to all day long.' I just floated the shots in there. I'm in the books now. I can relax a little bit."

Mink, of Knoxville, last played college basketball 52 years ago at Lees College in Jackson, Ky. After someone soaped the basketball coach's office, he lost his spot on the team and was expelled. Mink still says he didn't do it.

Last year, after shooting baskets at a neighbor's house, he wrote to several area colleges, and Roane State coach Randy Nesbit agreed to give him a chance. Mink has practiced regularly with the team since school began in August.

"We are first and foremost an educational institution that values integrity, honesty and treating others with fairness and respect".

-ISU President Gregory Geoffroy; circa May 2003.

somepeople here get mad because Gmac offers 8th graders. Then they applaud people who offer 72 year olds.

I do hear this guy has major upside.

Re: 72-Year Old Scores 2 pts in College BBall Game!

If he played in a college game 50 years ago, can he still be eligible (other than through a grandfather clause )?

When that Florida State quarterback was playing 8 or 9 years ago who was 26 or 27 at the time, it sounded like it was a rare exception because he enrolled but didn't participate at 18, and that had he participated, he would have been ineligible to play at 26 even if he had not used 4 years of college sports participation.

I highly doubt any sort of NCAA or whatever the Juco equivalent is organization is going to be looking very closely at Roane State Community College rules violations haha if there are any

Not as impressive as the amateur golfer who shot 5 holes in one in a single week including two in one day.

My grandpa played bball at Drake, maybe he can come back, of course he is 91, so that would obliterate whatever this 72 year old youngtimer did.

Keep that in mind a few years and he can try to break Buck O'Neil's record of being the oldest person to play in a professional baseball game (94+ years). (Buck was the Negro League player who had all the great stories in Ken Burns' Baseball series a few years ago).

Dean Wormer was wrong. Fat, drunk and stupid was a great way to go through college (all five years of it).
