So, why is the ISU pass D so bad?

It looks like LJ and Banks are better skill wise than some of the DBs from the past few years, but they are very green. The safeties seem to be making a lot of tackles, but hardly ever are in position to help on pass coverage. The LBers don't seem to be covering or making tackles. So is it that the players are just plain lost out there, they are no good, or the coaches are not getting things communicated.

    No pressure on the QB.

That is all that needs to be said.

    The corners can't cover forever.

Yep, it all starts with the Defensive line.

    Amen!

It cracks me up how everyone tries to analyze every little detail about what is wrong with the team. It is right there in front of you as obvious and clear as the sky is blue. Our ability to pressure the QB without blitzing is the key to success. Once we are able to do this, you will be amazed how good the D is "all of a sudden".

It just seems like every time a ball is thrown the closest guy we have is 5-10 yards away.

I will say, that it does seem like our secondary players are badly out of place many times on quick slants. I mean, 90 yards on a slant route against OSU? That should NEVER happen. And that wasn't the D-line's fault.

Actually, this happens all the time. Maybe not 90 yrds, but certainly 40, 50, 60, etc. Watch the SEC....virtually every game has these types of plays in them.

Re: So, why is the ISU pass D so bad?

I gotta go with the safeties. They are constantly out of position and getting beat. I understand that the D line needs to get more pressure, but the safeties are our biggest problem.

Re: So, why is the ISU pass D so bad?

I'm in agreement with Clone9. I put a lot of blame on the safeties. If you're running a Cover 2 and someone gets hit on the seam down the middle, that's on the deep men. I've seen it in multiple games, they've consistently broken the cardinal rule of being a safety.

Nobody should ever, EVER be behind you.

Then again, can't put all the blame on them. Nobody can cover forever, and if the front 7 can't stop the run, bringing the safeties up in run support is gashing us in the pass game.

Amazed this equation is such a hard one to crack. Watch the game...watch the defensive line. All questions answered.

Another thing to think about, do our DLs ever get their hands up? You hardly ever see ISU knock down a pass.

I was also going to say, when your leading tackler is a safety...there are issues. I believe that was also the case in 2003.
