Should Texas Tech be ranked #1?

A top 10 team, Texas Tech beat the number 1 team in the nation this weekend, plus the number 2 team beat a lowly Arkansas State team (who beat A&M who beat ISU). In addition, didn't Texas jump up to number one when they beat OU?

I think the voters didn't vote Tech number one because they believe the Red Raiders will get beaten by either OU or OSU by the end of the season.

The ESPN fan polls says TT is number one...

It doesn't really matter, one way or the other. The only poll that matters is the last one.

At the end of the day, you just don't want to be 3rd.

There are so many big games left, it doesn't make a difference right now.

Though I will still be ticked if Penn State gets to the big game over a one loss Big 12 winner.

If Tech wins their next two games (that is one huge challenge) I wouldn't be surprised if they were ranked #1 by the BCS.

if Tech wins the next 2 games, they will be #1. No reason to get worked up about 3 undefeated teams or who is ranked where, it will all work it self out.

I just hope it ends up being 7, 1 loss teams at the end of the year (Penn St., Bama, Florida, USC, Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech). That would make for some great drama on who gets to play for the title.

I don't see how Penn State doesn't run the table unless Michigan State trips them up. And without a big 10 title game, nothing seems to be in their way. Sadly, we might see an amazing big 12 or sec team not get in.

Texas Tech offense is just great to watch. It's like watching UNLV basketball a few years ago when Tarkanian was running it. The running rebels (cheaters) were so fun to watch even if you hated them.

Iowa State needs to think up an offense nobody else uses. Leach has taken a crappy school and crappy program and turned it into a place where people want to play and have fun.

Thing about Tech I didn't realize was that they CAN run when needed. And their effective passing created big holes for running.

Sadly, I believe you are right about this. For Penn State to lose a game closing out the season, they would have to lay a really freakin big egg, because that conference is so weak. We can bicker about the Big 10 not having a title game all we want, but really, who would they get in that game that would challenge them anyway? OSU is the only school close, and PSU beat them in Columbus.

The sad things is I really don't see how things play out so that PSU doesn't get in. And I think we are going to get to enjoy another title game with a Big 10 team getting their teeth kicked in. I enjoy seeing such a thing, but three years in a row is too much. I don't even think it matters who PSU would play, Tech, Texas, OU, Florida, Bama, I think they get killed by any one of them.

Exactly. If Penn State gets in, they'll get completely crushed and then we'll have another year of "I told you so" on how horrible the BCS sytem is.

Why can't they do an 8 team playoff. 6 teams from the major conference champions and two at large. Yes, yes I know you could have "three" worthy at large teams, but that's much better than having a title contender left out. You could use the BCS formula for the seeding of the 8 teams even.

I don't think Penn St. is as bad as some of the Ohio St. BCS teams of the last few years. I still think they would lose, but I think they are solid. I would much rather see them in the title game than Alabama. I don't want Saban to win.

Right. At the moment, it does not matter. And, at the moment, they're in the title game as long as they don't lose.

If they were 3rd right now, there could easily be a case to complain about it.

Re: Should Texas Tech be ranked #1?

It's going to be real interesting in the South division for the last few games. I really think OU will win out, and I think Tech beats OSU. So basically Texas, OU, and Tech will all finish 11-1 (7-1). Since they will have all beaten each other, it comes down to highest ranked BCS team. OU will have the benefit of beating Tech and OSU in their last 2 games, and Texas plays no one over their last 3, so I think OU is in the Big 12 title game. They will beat whichever sacrificial lamb the North throws at them (prob. Mizzou).

If everything shakes out like that, I have a hard time seeing OU being left out of the title game. Any chance we see OU v. Florida for the national title with Penn State being left out in the cold (assuming Fla over Bama in the SEC champ game)?

You wouldn't be giving the non-BCS conference teams a fair shake. It's arguable that the MWC is as solid as a couple of the BCS conferences this year.

And if you did give them a fair shake, you'd be leaving out worth at-large BCS conference teams.

If you're going to have more than a +1 type playoff, you're going to need to be very inclusive when it comes to non-BCS conference teams, otherwise it's really no different than the current system.

I'd like to see the whole thing play out more-or-less as-is - maybe with some provisions for undefeated teams tossed in - and then a +1 game between the top two teams after the bowl season is done. I can't think of a college football season that would have not resulted in "one, true" national champion with a system like that.

Unless the entire NCAA division/conference/schedule is totally overhauled, there is no way you are ever going to have a "fair" system.

#2 or #1, it means nothing. If TT wins out, they are in the national championship game. But they are not going to win out.
