If Tech can achieve this much ...

The Texas Tech football program has performed at a high level for the last decade. But did they really have that great of a program before Mike Leach took over the coaching responsibilities? How does a team playing in the shadow of the Texas Longhorns achieve so much?

If Tech can get to this level, why not ISU?

I can only assume ISU spends a lot on airfare by both recruits and coaches.

If their location was that much of an asset you would expect them to have a much longer record of success than what they have experienced.

Scholarship limits... Texas and Texas A&M used to get every quality player in Texas, now they can only get a select few. The others will filter over to Tech to play an exciting brand of football...

I have and it's not like Ames. Their greater metropolitan area has over 260,000 people (look it up) which is much bigger than Ames. I realize Des Moines is 30 minutes south of Ames, but most students don't make the trip often for Friday and Saturday nights.

I love Ames, lived there for 10+ years, but comparing Iowa to Texas isn't even close.

some kids may not be as wrapped up in the college town itself as compared to the chance to get immediate playing time and have a chance to be a star on the team. Places like Austin or metro Houston (TAMU) may not appeal to kids from small towns or west Texas. It sometimes takes the right person (a M. Leach, a Bill Snyder, Joe Tiller from his Wyoming days) to turn a rather undesireable location into a home of winning football.

I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.

Many of the prized Texas high school football recruits are from either Dallas or Houston. Lubbock is as close to those metro areas as Ames is to Chicago.

Also, it's not like their program is trash. They have been to 31 bowls games. I wish our program could say the same...

I fully agree with your assessment. I sure wish that ISU could find that "right person"

Re: If Tech can achieve this much ...

one thing I noticed about TT and OKST yesterday is the size they have in the D-lines and D-ends, cripes those guys are animals... I'm not trying to rip on our current guys, but they are undersized for the Big12... other teams QBs hardly ever deal with pressure from ISUs front men.. and that there is why ISU gets torched every week. I like our offensive skill guys, and our d-backfield has the potential to be very good in the coming seasons, but the game is won in the trenches, and until ISU gets more big, nasty d-linemen, d-ends and o-lineman, we'll always be looking for a third or fourth win in the middle of november.

So true. Texas is a hell hole.

In reality, the team that we should be looking at and saying "if it can happen there, it can happen here" is K-State. Manhattan is brutal. It's in the scrubs of nowhere. There is a co-op a quarter mile from the stadium. They graze livestock in the main public tailgate lot. If Bill Snyder could win the Big 12 there, somebody sure as heck can do it in Ames.

In 1984, I was hospitalized for approaching perfection.
