    Re: Nice Lung Shot

Why would anyone shoot a young buck like that?

It is probably an 8 pointer, how long are you going to wait for a bigger one?

I can visually see 7. Eight isn't that hard to imagine with one hiden from the camera.

Oh please. Not everyone gets to wait around and shoot a 12 pointer. Not everyone gets to wait around for even a buck. Some people even choose to shoot does, or heaven forbid... smaller does for more tender meat. IMO, it's better to shoot does anyways. But there is nothing wrong with shooting any deer in Iowa.

When deer are endangered you can complain to me about shooting them.

*Nice shot with the arrow, by the way!

there is nothing wrong with shooting does. i agree, its not all about the antlers, but unless they are kids, i dont believe in shooting smaller bucks. on our land, we now have a rule that you cant shoot a deer younger than 4 years or without 4 points on one side, but the point is to try to shoot older bucks. we have had this rule for two or three years, and we have shot 9 wall hangers in the last year, where before we would get maybe 2 or 3. its worth it as far as im concerned.

That's a pretty good idea. I guess it just depends on what you're hunting... meat or a trophy rack. I haven't had the luxury of tracking or hunting a large buck, so I usually shoot the first thing that I'm able to, unless it's opening weekend and it's a small deer. Then I would probably pass it up. But if it's crunch time and I need to fill a tag, I'd shoot just about anything. I'm hunting meat and trying to help thin the deer population.

    Re: Nice Lung Shot

Looks like 7 to me. That's not the point of what I originally said. With months left in the season, why take such a young buck? Iowa has plenty of trophy deer. Take all the does you want, but let the young bucks grow up.

    Re: Nice Lung Shot

We only go after the trophy bucks. As for the meat, we usually keep enough for jerky and donate the rest to the Iowa prison system.

I'll get that 30 point buck eventually!

    Re: Nice Lung Shot

Nice pile of corn on the ground under the deer. If this picture was taken in Iowa, that is considered baiting and is illegal.
