    High School Football Substate/Playoffs

I know there are several people on this board that have close ties to some of the HS teams whether it be coaching or have kids on the team. With playoffs starting today, who do you have winning? I haven't seen any HS games this year so my knowledge isn't real high, but it seems like the teams who are usually at the top are still there.

    Undefeated teams for each class.

Really pulling for North Scott, but I see Bettendorf repeating as 4A champions this year - they look stronger than even last year (North Scott could be the only team that gives them a real "scare" before the finals, though).

So tonight is the rediculous substate round with teams with losing records playing. I remember when we were 5-4 and didn't make it and we understood why. It was something you earned.

I have to root for Ames and Ankeny! Went to Ames and live in Ankeny now.

I'm surprised there hasn't been more talk of this - my hometown only lost 2 games our senior year and we didn't make it. My wife's hometown of Ogden wins three games TOTAL this year and makes it.

    Honestly it's pathetic.

    Re: High School Football Playoffs

I understand the expanded playoffs for reason of involving as many student-athletes as possible. But at the 4A level 32 or 48 teams qualified for the new format. That is beyond ridiculous! If you are going to go to that extreme then figure out a system that includes every team!

Extremely pathetic. And what's this crap about starting the playoffs in the middle of the week? Stupid if you ask me.

I loved 16 teams. I think the furthest they should go is 24 with the top 8 getting a bye.

    Re: High School Football Playoffs

I gaurantee one of the top teams in one of the classes WILL have one of their best players go down with an injury in a game that should have never been played. The team will then be upset. Mark my words, it will happen tonight.

    Re: High School Football Playoffs

I dont get why the expanded field for the football playoffs is a big deal. Every other high school sport kicks off the post season with every team getting in. When will the crusade against those sports letting sub .500 teams in start?

We went 7-2 my junior year, lost to Dowling by 2 and Roosevelt by 2, didn't make the playoffs. Now, Lincoln is 4-5 and in. I feel like uncle Rico.

    Re: High School Football Playoffs

They just need to scrap the "conferences" and select the top 16 teams. A team that loses two games to top 5 teams shouldn't be left out. If you aren't just picking the top 16 then have 8 districts, play everyone in your district and take the top two from there...

    Re: High School Football Playoffs

First round playoffs have started on a Wednesday for at least the last 15 years.
We need to get some Cybookie bets out there for these.
Toughest game to call in 4A is Waukee/Indianola.

Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating.

I think this would be a good format. My senior year we were 7-2 and didn't make the playoffs, I have seen teams before be 8-1 and not make the playoffs. It seems like a good idea until you have teams with 3 or 4 wins in the playoffs.

But then again every other sport (I think) in high school lets all the teams be in the playoffs. Last year a local team here in Minnesota had maybe 2 wins in the regular season then won 2 games in the playoffs and were in the Sectional Championship game.

    Re: High School Football Playoffs

3A is going to have the best playoffs throughout. There are a number of teams that could end up winning the thing: SC Heelan or Mt. Pleasant are teams to beat I think. Carroll is high octane spread with Haluska being a great QB. Decorah will be tough as well as Clear Lake.

    This is also very true.

I didn't know that because my high school hasn't been to the playoffs in a while until this new rule this year. What's the reasoning for this? If everyone has to deal with it it is fair, it just seems weird. Doesn't Illinois have their first round on the weekend?
