    Guard defense

I'm concerned about the defense played by the guards... won't we be up against better athletes than McKeown(sp?) in the Big 12??

    Re: Guard defense

of course but i dont know if they will get away with carries, throwing elbows, and getting ghost foul calls like McKowen did tonight. Did we play good D against him tonight? Not even close. The guy is an average player and we made him look like an all star.

    Re: Guard defense

Was it just me or was there some terrible calls in that game...there was more shoving and pushing on us and we didnt get anything. But I guess this is expected when you are playing on the road.

    Re: Guard defense

McKowen is a very good guard......we will face more athletic guards, but not very many that have that intangible hard nose play. I'm wondering if our recruit out of Nebraska is this type of guy. Always hate them unless they play on your team.

I was there with Cyclone Alley, the Ref's were HORRIBLE.

John Walters and Eric Heft commented a few times about bad calls too, but I don't think it was the difference in this game. We were out-played, but there were plenty of things to be encouraged about as well. UNI is no slouch and we also ran into a good player having a great game.

Yeah well, ya know, that's just, like uh, your opinion, man.

We only managed 2 steals last night. Both by Clark.

I watched it on KFXA (Fox) and didn't really see any calls which struck me as "awful". ISU's shot selection was horrible, as was our guard defense. Brooks Mc basically had his way with Michael Taylor. GM has a lot of work to do there; he runs around screens rather than fighting thru them (see McKowen's three point shots), gives up the baseline freely and doesn't contest the entry pass into the post at all. He crosses his feet rather than "slide" and is basically "out of control" at most times. I wasn't impressed with Taylor at all. I wonder if Will Blalock's having any second thoughts as he toils away in the NBA Developmental league?

Thank you. I didn't like all the whistles, but I didn't really see any that made me leap out of my chair either.

I respectfully disagree. Brooks McCowen is a marginal guard who had the game of his life last night. I'm hoping this was an aberration or the result of a game plan designed to not allow Coleman/Stout to beat us. If we can't play better defense on opposing guards, we're in for a long season.

    Re: Guard defense

I didn't see any fouls that drove me bananas, but they were calling it extremely tight and our guards didn't take advantage of that by driving right into the defense. We were flat out outplayed in this game.

It's clearly a problem Bryce. No one wants to drive. Clark even had a perfect opportunity after a steal or fast break - could have drove the lane hard - was just one-on-one. He didn't and we didn't get points.

We really could use a slasher right now.

    Re: Guard defense

I have to admit, it would be really nice to have Blalock right now.

I've been impressed with Clark's ballhandling ability this year, but I don't know if he feels confident enough to take it right to the rack. Especially in that situation where he could just use the right hand and jump right over the guy.

It is definitly a problem, and it was something I expected Taylor to handle when it became apparent that's the way it was going to go. He only took 3 FT's yesterday and it was when he was called for a tick-tack foul on a three. He needs to take the ball into the defender and get to the line in that situation, I don't care how skinny he is.

I think we'll see real improvement from this game though as they look at film. That might be more important for the season as it goes along than a close win would have been.

    Re: Guard defense

Eh...I don't know what game some of you were watching, but I counted AT LEAST 4-5 phantom fouls in the first half. The refs got better after halftime, but in the 1st half, why were they calling fouls out of left field?? Not saying we would have won if the refs were not pitiful, but it would have been much closer at half. Refs killed us in the 1st half. 16 free throws...what a joke.

No wonder UNI always wins at the garbage dome...
