    FG Kicking

I'm certainly not going to begrudge a true freshman his misses, but did Grant Mahoney's four fg attempts seem...odd to anyone else? A chip shot he shanks. Then a 51 yarder (I certainly won't criticize choosing to attempt it) is off...then 32 and 26 yarders practically land in the Jacobsen building, straight on with plenty if leg to spare, would have been good from twenty or thirty yards further out.

    The maddening inconsistency of youth.

Well you know, the best thing about freshmen is that they become sophomores.

    Re: FG Kicking

Maybe we should ask the NCAA if they can widen the goal posts.

Maybe they should just go for it on 4th down.

Gee, I didn't start the thread to bash the poor kid. The last two attempts were perfect.

Every thread is either going to be a bash or an asinine proposal to make things easier on poor Iowa State.

So we should just line up against AHS every Saturday, and save travel costs?

    Re: FG Kicking

I thought maybe he was hurting, at first....his first kick off did not go very deep either, but that was probably into the wind. The 51 yard attemp had the distance, just went right. His later kicks did seem to look much stronger.

You said it.....he will be a sophomore soon! And a good one!

    Re: FG Kicking

The UCF kicker just pounded a 54 yarder right down the middle a bit ago.

Mahoney will be a fine kicker with more experience. Right now our coaching staff needs to realize that when our defense is non-existant, we need to be going for touchdowns and not FG's.

I dunno. The two missed fg's would have made it a different game. So would A&M not getting a gift of the ball at the thirty-seven.

    Re: FG Kicking

I wasnt knocking the kicker. I know he can hit 50 yarders. ISU need TDs to keep that game close. Kicking field goals was like bringing a knife to a gun fight.

    Re: FG Kicking

If this were last year, we would have not even tried the 51 yarder. This shows how much confidence Chizik has in Mahoney.

Well, once Lamaak went down, it took quite a while to adjust to keep the right side from eating Arnaud alive. Can't count on the offense when the defensive end is in the qb's face in two steps every passing down.

Edit: Metaphorically, I think that counts as getting your gun stolen.

I wonder what kind of odds the Little Cyclones would get?

    Re: FG Kicking

I agree on Coach Chizek having confidence in him....also when he comes off the field, the rest of the team interacts with him also.....he has th econfidence of the team!

I never did hear an explanation of the onside kick.....I sit in Section 19, so I was on the other end of the field....did the refs ever signal ISU ball ..? If not, why was our Offense and their defense on the field during the review....?

I think that first one was just a bad kick. The second one looked dead on...damn that wind. Third and fourth kicks I think he got a good idea of what type of wind he would be kicking into and just kicked them the way he should have. It was real good to see him bounce back from those two and not hang his head and close shop, shows that he understands what he did wrong and fixed it...wish the defense could do that
