Have to get better play with less talent

Everyone keeps on saying that we just don't have the talent to get the job done or not enough talent to run this defense. Unless Chizik starts pulling in amazing recruiting classes in the near future, which I doubt, we are many years away from being somewhat successful.

It will come down to the excuse of we can't win because we don't have talent and we don't have talent because we can't win.

If we want to turn this thing around we have to get more out of the talent we have. I am sorry for the rant its just I am tired of this lack of talent excuse.

Point to the teams in the top 25 that don't have talent or have talent on par with us.

Minnesota has a lot more talent than us. How they only won 1 game last year, no one knows. The year before they went 6-7, which was disappointing for the talent that they had, and they lost few players going into last year.

[quote=ScottyP;691361]Everyone keeps on saying that we just don't have the talent to get the job done or not enough talent to run this defense.

The main problem I have with this is that if we don't have the talent to run this defense, then they should be running another defense. What ever they are doing now on defense is not going to beat anyone. In the last 3 games the oppenent has had guys wide open all over the field. Even when ISU was rushing 3 and dropping 8 there were guys wide open. That is just crazy bad. The play of the safeties has been horrible. Better guys would help, but it is pretty clear that the current players don't know where to go or who to cover. The pass coverage by the LBers has been really bad too. Tightends have been have career days every week against ISU. Maybe the best solution is to simplify the defense, get out of the zones with the gapping holes in them, and go back to the complicated stuff after they can handle the easier stuff.

Exactly. Part of coaching is being able to find out what works for you. We are literally beating a dead horse with our Defensive schemes right now.

Re: Have to get better play with less talent

How does Boise State do it?

Rivals recruiting rankings since 2002 (including to-date 2008):
    #74, #101, #85, #64, #70, #68, #89

    AP Top 25 ranking since 2002 (including to-date 2008)
    #15, #16, #12, NR, #5, NR, #11

No, they don't play in the Big 12 and the majority of their Ws come against the WAC, but they've certainly held their own against major conference opponents during this time when they have an opportunity to play them (5-8 against major conference teams during the same time span with wins over Oregon, Oregon State twice, Oklahoma, and of course, Iowa State).

I wouldn't be opposed to a pre-game sacrifice. Some random animal, opposing team's mascot, Miles Brand...

Consistency --- of coaching, of recruiting, of program, of scheme....

I am too, mostly because it's flat out not true.

If you want to look at scout.com recruiting rankings for the 4-year class, here we are compared to teams that have beaten us during the Chizik era:

    School, recruiting class ranking in 2004, 2005, 2006, & 2007:

    ISU -- 57, 50, 59, 69
    UNLV -- 93, 85, 88, 93
    Kent State -- 116, 110, 113, 89
    Toledo -- 97, 102, 76, 79
    Baylor -- 89, 64, 55, 52
UNI - Div II, not ranked

Do we have the talent to compete with Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, etc.? No. But we have better talent than teams like UNLV, Kent State, Toledo, Baylor, and UNI, and we can't beat them either. So that "lack of talent" argument only goes so far.

Gene Smith, 1993-2000. 7 years, 6 NCAA's, 1 bowl game. Revenue sports postseason participation 50%. Good.
    Bruce Vandevelde, 2000-20005. 5 years, 4 bowl games, 2 NCAA's, 2 NIT's. Postseason participation 80%. Better.
    Jamie Pollard, 2005-. 4 years. 1 bowl game, 0 NCAA's, 0 NIT's. Postseason participation: 13%. The next big step.

My ignore list: splitidentity, tarheelhawk, superdorf, clones_jer. That is all.
