Who is going to play on DL next year?

If Akeem Spence doesn't come here, I hope the coaches have some Plan B recruits because the cupboard is pretty bare. Just about our entire two-deep is made up of juniors and seniors:

    DE
    - Kurtis Taylor, Sr.
    - Travis Ferguson, Sr.
    - Nick Frere, Sr.
    - Rashawn Parker, Jr.
    - Christopher Lyle, Jr.

    DT/NG
    - Michael Tate, Sr.
    - Chris Weir, Sr.
    - Nate Frere, Jr.

Right now Taylor Martin is our one and only DL recruit committed to ISU. Who the heck is going to play next year? We need at least another 2-3 recruits on the DL. It blows my mind that Texas is already loaded and they have 5 blue-chip DL commits. You'd think that some of those guys would rather come to ISU and play right away. Plus we've had some success with guys making it to the NFL (Rubin, Curvey, Carstens, etc).

Re: Who is going to play on DL next year?

I hope we have some redshirt DL players that will step in next year and i'm just as nervous about this postion as you are...It doesn't really blow my mind that texas has 5 blue-chip commits (they are texas and they pretty much get what they want and i'm sure Mack Brown sells them playing time pretty well)...Rashawn Parker is great out on the edge but he really should only be used on straight rushing the qb plays since he is not a great run stopper.

Hopefully Bailey Johnson is healthy next season.

I wouldn't call Parker a great edge player. Lyle is an infinitely better pass rusher than Parker. If anything, Parker is playing still because he is better against the run than Lyle.

Laing, McDonough, Alburtis, J. Black, B. Johnson, Maggitt, Ruempolhamer.....

....not an entirely bare cupboard....we'll just have to see how they develop.

I do hope the DEs do not get faked out as much in the future by the shifty little qbs as they rush in. Ganz and McCoy made them look a step slow with their little fake passes.

Half of the starting DL for next year isn't even on the team right now.

Re: Who is going to play on DL next year?

There will be a battle for the two tackles spots between fourth-year SR Nate Frere, fourth-year JR Bailey Johnson (maybe a SO if he gets a medical hardship), fourth-year JR Austin Alburtis, redshirt SO Jerrod Black, true SO Stephen Ruempolhamer, redshirt FR Jake McDonough, and whoever else we bring in this year (hopefully Akeem Spence). It will be the first time in a while that all our DTs are guys we've been developing since high school rather than a mixture of JUCOs and young DTs. If I had to guess now, I would say the starters will be Frere and Johnson.

Defensive end is a bit trickier. We will have fifth-year SR Chris Lyle, fourth-year SR Rashawn Parker, and redshirt FR Roosevelt Maggitt at weakside end, as well as whoever we bring in. At strongside end, we will have third-year JR Taylor Martin, redshirt FR Cleyon Laing, and whoever else we bring in. We may see Lyle or Parker move to SDE next year if Martin or Laing can't start. I would really like us to get Luke Sager and Ian Knight because Sager looks talented enough to play some next year and Knight could be here in January.

Re: Who is going to play on DL next year?

What is the story on Fabian Brown? He moved to DE at Iowa Central but what is the status on him?

Honestly I think we will be in slightly better shape next year at DL than we are this year considering who we have in the system. Also, the guy I'm most intrigued about on the DL is Ruempolhamer. This kid has only one way to go, and that's up. Considering he is already an intimidating dude as a freshman....

Re: Who is going to play on DL next year?

Too bad we aren't young on the DL. I wasn't aware that we were so veteran on the DL this year. Young on the DL will be terrible for next years team. Kinda goes against the young excuse I've been hearing about our team. I'm getting concerned as this season goes along.

Not really. We are playing alot of young guys because the veterens aren't really that good (Mac guys). As soon as Chizik and Bolt get their own guys in on the line and get them some expereience we will be in really good shape.

Exactly. The depth is there, but not necessarily the experience. At least we'll have competition.

As it has been said the last few weeks...our two deep is pretty darn worthless since we rotate so many players in and out at nearly every position.

Re: Who is going to play on DL next year?

I wasn't specifically watching who was in on every play but it seemed like Reump-however you spell it, played a lot of minutes against Nebraska. If he continues to develop I have a feeling he will be starting next fall. Hopefully he can put on 10-15 lbs of muscle by next year. 6-3 300 lbs is a decent size DT in this conference. I'm not as worried about the inside as I am about who will replace Taylor. Kurtis will be the toughest guy to replace on defense. The other Senior starters are average at best. Hunley can hit but he really struggles in coverage. Bibbs hasn't played well since his injury and Tate just seems to be filling a hole until the younger guys develop.
