Charges on Credit card from Alumni Association - Not Good PR move...

All - If you are National Cyclone Club members who got automatically signed up for the Alumni Association, watch out...

I saw a charge from Iowa State University on my credit card for $55.

Having a hunch, I went to the Alumni association and found out that that happens to be the annual renewal fee...

So I called them. They said they made a big boo boo. This will not make people happy.

Especially since I never signed up in the first place and never gave them my credit card number!!

They must have got it from NCC or the athletic dept...

I told the lady on the phone I would be nice, but I am betting other people will not be so forgiving...

What a way to anger your strongest allies and donors!

I have to say this was one of Jamie's biggest missteps having us all signed up for AA and putting trust in that organization with your most prized athletic donors...

Actually, I thought it was a great move by both organizations. It'll surely prop up number for the AA, at least for a while.

If I'm not mistaken - ALL the money for the university get's funnelled though the Foundation. I'm guessing that's where the mistake was made. That's where your CC number came from - most likely not really a "sharing" of information.

But thanks for the heads up. I have my NCC membership paid quarterly and probably would've confused it with that.

I presume they said they were going to refund your money?

Re: Charges on Credit card from Alumni Association - Not Good PR move...

The Alumni Association doesn't run the cards - some bank does. But the Alumni Association shouldn't know your card number unless you give it to them.

This sounds like a violation of Gramm-Leach-Bliley (the sharing of private information such as credit card numbers with non-affiliated 3rd parties) and I'd take it up with the bank that runs the card and their regulator.

And you can probably make a stink with VISA or MasterCard (whichever kind of card it is) as well.

I think Alumni Association has their own budget and my guess their own income statement.

You are correct that NCC money gets funneled through the foundation.

They said they did it to alot of people and are reversing the transactions. I won't escalate it any further, but it does make me wonder what kind of place they are running...

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life:
The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves Orcs. ~ John Rogers

Yep. Nothing like credit card fraud to show what a class act you are.

Somebody, somewhere needs to go to prison, if you ask me. Or at least fired.

Wow, that is credit card fraud! This will be ugly if they bill me for a Alumni Association membership.

I bet if you read the fine print it says that $55 for AA dues will be billed to your Credit Card. You may need help reading the 3 pt font!

How could they? I never signed up for the AA. I just looked and I have not been billed, and the NCC has my credit card number.

Hey! I already was a member of the AA and they just cancelled my membership and credited my account! That's reverse-pickpocketing!
