Ohio St. vs USC in BCS Championship Game

I have a bad feeling this might happen again! Just here me out...

I know that everyone "thinks" that the pollsters won't crown Ohio State 1 or 2 no matter what because of past debacles in big games.

All this is predicated on 3 things...

    1) Ohio State beats Penn St and wins out (no champ game)
    2) USC wins out (easily, Pac 10 is AWFUL)
    3) The Big 12 and SEC beat each other up the last 1/2 of the season. Keep in mind not only do they knock each other off in the regular season...whoever COMES OUT clean into the Big 12/SEC title games will have to "do it again." Something teams have historically failed to do.

Alabama / Florida will each lose a game.
Texas / Okie State / Tech will each lose a game

Not that hard to imagine and like they say (in regards to the BCS mess) Those that don't learn from their mistakes are doomed to repeat them!

Big 10 should be forced to have a championship game like the rest of college football.

Re: Ohio St. vs USC in BCS Championship Game

This is one of my fears as well. But I think Penn State is good enough to win out.

I don't think USC will make it in, but it will end up being another SEC vs. Big Ten beatdown for the NC, and it sure would be nice to have a competitive NC game one of these years.

However, as long as the Big Ten keeps on placing a team in the NC game, it will continue to be a boring game. The Big Ten knows better than to have a conference championship game, because they know they would have no chance of placing a team in the NC game unless they have a team that thoroughly dominates.

I agree. It should be one of the terms of being considered a "BCS conference."

If they don't want to have one, fine, they shouldn't be allowed to play in ANY BCS games.

The only way Ohio St makes the national championship is if they win out, and every other BCS team has at least 2 losses.

Re: Ohio St. vs USC in BCS Championship Game

I can see this happening as well.

Yup, this is the problem with having so many good teams in the conference, they beat each other up. Then on top of that, have the title game. I like the concept of a title game, but I think every conference should have one, or no conference should.

USC is a great football team and have a great tradition out there. And I don't mean to take away from that. Generally the Pac-10 will have another 2 teams ranked, (Oregon, Cal are generally decent) but those teams are rarely ranked higher than say #15. So SC just has to beat those teams, then aviod a few upsets... If the they do get upset, let the power conferences beat up on each other and back door it into the title game.

I wish conferences had the same rules and standards. It's hard to determine who is the best if everyone in plays by different ones.

No one "forces" any conference to have a championship game. The Big 10 decided they don't want a championship game, so they don't get any of the conference championship game revenue that conferences like the Big 12 get.

    Right, and I agree.

However without a championship game, you avoid having two undefeated or one loss teams beat each. When this doesn't happen, you can almost be guaranteed two BCS teams.

I don't have the numbers and would like to see them... What brings in more revenue? A second team in a BCS game? or a Conference title game? Anyone have numbers on this?

Was there a past/current rule that you had to have 12 teams in your confernce in Division 1 to have a conference championship game?

Yes you have to have 12 teams to have a Championship game. The Big 10 has been holding out from adding the 12th team in hopes of getting Notre Dame to join and that is not going to happen.

There is not a "Rule", but with 12 teams you have a nice little money maker for your Conference and one more game your best team might lose to miss out on the National Championship.

As a Cyclone Fan, my second favorite team has now become the winner of the Okie State/Texas game in hope the Big XII will produce an undeafeated team.

An undeafeated team will be a lock to make the title game.

I sure hope Penn State runs the table so the Big XII team will play them instead of USC.

Re: Ohio St. vs USC in BCS Championship Game

Serious question: Did any of you guys watch the Texas game last night? I know they have some tough games yet to play, but I don't see any reason to think that they can't win out. And even if they don't, I think a one loss Texas or OU team with the strength of the Big 12 South would be a more deserving option than a 1 loss OSU team.

I really agree with the opinion that all the other contenders will need to lose 2 for OSU to slip in.

The best figures I could find said the Big 12 makes about $10m from their championship game, while BCS games are worth $12-$14m. But I don't think that Big 12 figure includes TV rights, and might not include a few other things like parking and concessions. I'm guessing the Big 12 championship brings in about the same or maybe a little less than a BCS game. Keep in mind that the losing team still goes to a bowl after that (probably), so the conference still gets a bowl payout from them. The Big 12 knows their finances, and I think they play a championship game because they know it makes money for them.

Ohio St. will not be in the title game. Remember that LSU was the number one team last year with two losses going into the game. Texas, Okie St, Tech, and Alabama are all undefeated.

Even if each of those loss one game in the regular season, Ohio St. will still have the same record. That's in the worst BCS conference and with a humiliating loss to a defeatable USC team.

I can't see a senerio, at this point with all the great teams in the Big12, I can't see a Big12 team not being in the title game. I would really like to see a Big12 vs. SEC title game so we can prove that the Big12 is the stronger conference.

I'm more worried about Penn State in the championship game than I am OSU. I too would like to see a Big XII vs. SEC championship this year.
