    Should negative rep be reinstated?

While I am sure that most on this site find the rep feature to be somewhat superficial, I think the overall level of respectful discourse is improved when there is an option to give or receive negative rep.

I absolutely agree - there have been a significant increase in completely asinine posts/threads ever since negative rep was abolished, especially in the last week.

Re: Should negative rep be reinstated?

I have found the Neg Rep feature is probably used more by people who disagree with another person's OPINION (especially on Politics Cave). I think the Mods can enforce respectful discourse. I think the present system forces people to focus on the positive aspects of the posts rather than negativity. Don't really care one way or the other. But when Neg Rep was available, it was the same select few that would constantly Neg Rep me.

I agree that negative rep should only be used when a poster is being disrespectful, rather than when you disagree with someone's opinion. Whether people care about their overall rep or not though, it does provide instant feedback, and I personally will take a look at the post again to see if I was a little disrespectful or overbearing in that particular post.

The thing is that people only really used it to put a member down for simply having an opinion. If everybody could use it respectfully, it never would have gone away.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

Neg rep stinks. It's a message board, people get emotional and heated then use neg rep in juvenile ways. If you don't like someone's post---say so, it's a message board.

I'm guilty of using neg rep badly myself. Someone gave me neg rep on an opinion once so I just gave them a neg rep on their very next post. It was dumb, but I did it. Be honest, I think most people can see that it won't be used the right way.

Stormin, as you know, you and I agree on virtually nothing in the realm of politics. But you are dead on here.

Frankly, I do not find any less civility here without negative rep. I think there is a small percentage of people that just loved passing out negative rep to anyone that was expressing an opinion that differed from theirs.

I enjoy this site because of the opinions. I don't come here for news or insider information because I can get that elsewhere. I come here to see the opinions of others and I, personally, enjoy "debating" issues with someone that has a position that differs from mine...especially when that person is using a thoughtful and reasoned approach.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

Re: Should negative rep be reinstated?

I think most of the neg rep I got was for either being sarcastic or pointing out obvious concerns with basketball. I don't see why either of those should be a neg rep situation.

That may be so, but it seems that the level of disrespectful posts has increased since it's removal. I have received negative rep myself merely for an opinion too, but I have also received it when I went a little far or got a little personal with my response. I think it helps keep things in check, even though it may have an additional downside.

For some reason I had a sudden urge to Vote Third Party, so I selected "don't care".

Re: Should negative rep be reinstated?

Here is why I think it should be brought back:

#1 It weeded out the idiots. I remember a few new members with negative rep and from reading their posts, they deserved it.

#2 It really didn't hurt those that posted on a regular basis. If you can't say enough good things to compensate for the negative rep than you deserve the minus rating.

#3 There were a few times that I got a negative rep that I deserved. The negative rep made me think about I said and made me think more about what I was posting.

#4 If you think the person that negative rep'd you wasn't fair than just do it back to them.I only remember one time giving a wrongful negative rep to someone (I think it was Stormin) so I went back later and gave him a positive for no reason and admitted that I was wrong.

Re: Should negative rep be reinstated?

Negative rep is between two posters, making it personal. If you truly think a post deserves such a comment, pm the poster.

As a message conversation board, all members should expect differences of opinion. That's what makes the experience interesting. I haven't given anyone negative rep because I think most everything that's posted is in some form of the spirit of this type of interaction. I have disagreed with posts, but that's part of why this whole concept works.

As for payback if you think a poster's negative rep of you was uncalled for: it sounds kind of juvenile to me. Who else is keeping score on your reps except you?

Anyway, I vote no because I want to continue to see the reasoned (and occasionally unreasoned) discourse without fear of someone not liking an expressed opinion that CF provides.
