Some of the sentiments seem to conflict with what the DMR interview suggested! Which is closer to the reality?

While his initial decision was stupid, at least he's not throwing fuel on the fire by saying the wrong things now.

Does this change the fact that he left in the middle of the season and went to the AD and not his coach?

"Since my freshman year until now, some things have occurred, and I just felt like this was a good time for me to step down," Bates said. "I just felt like I wouldn't get to maximize my potential here at Iowa State.
    Yep, great timing, Philly.

As Keith said on soundoff. Call it what you want, but when you leave your teammates without a huge outside circumstance, you QUIT.

Re: Crow being served for many on this board today

It really doesn't change anything - he quit on the team mid-season and wasn't man enough to approach the staff himself. How does that force one to eat crow?

Not to mention, you're still only hearing one side of the story. I'm glad the staff is man enough to let this be and not make Philip and daddy out to be the fools they are for handling this as they have.

He quit the team in the middle of the season, so at this point it looks a lot more like damage control then anything else.

Re: Crow being served for many on this board today

All I said was it was incredibly lame that he didn't contact the coach himself and that he left in the middle of the season, and that was 90%+ people's responses on here. This doesn't change any of that.

Re: Crow being served for many on this board today

Interesting article. I love Chizik's quote. Bates seems like a good kid at heart.

Chizik and staff clearly made their decision as to who they wanted to play QB and that was not Bates. Bates made his decision to leave after the writing was on the wall that he was not the chosen QB at ISU. I hate to see us lose quality players.

I do have some concern that our coaching staff was unable to talk Bates into playing another position when it appears that his only chance of making money as a pro appears to be at a position other than QB. Of course a lot of people told Seneca Wallace that he would never make money as a pro QB before he made his way to ISU...he found a place that would give him a chance to be a QB in ISU and look how that turned out. On the other hand, I think there are a lot more guys like Corey Webster (DB for the NY Giants) who came to LSU as a QB and was converted to DB by Nick Saban (a master at talking kids into playing the best position for them and for the team).

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

The knock on Seneca was that he was short, not wildly inaccurate though.

if you were trying to go to Nebraska (as many feel he is), what would you say in the Omaha paper?
