Yeah, I remember you voicing concern for this a few months ago. It appears you were on to something.

I don't mean to make light of it, but I can't see how you don't see the damn thing coming in time to get out of the way? These things aren't small and they aren't exactly zipping around downtown.

Yeah, you've got to have your I-pod pretty loud to drown out a bus.

Unless, it was one of those hybrid buses that runs on battery power. That might be able to sneak up on someone.

Re: Another person hit by DART bus

How does one get hit by a bus??? My 8 year and 4 year old know how to get out of the way of a bus. It's not like the bus just started rolling down the area either. It's actually a bus area where cars are not allowed. So it's not like you don't know a bus is comming.

Re: Another person hit by DART bus

Well, the article says the pedestrian had the right of way in a crosswalk. And that he was in the blind spot of the bus.

So I'm guessing she was turning onto 8th street off Walnut?

Otherwise, if she wasn't turning, wouldn't she have had to run a red light? Or at least roll though it?

One of the comments is interesting:

I was one of the witnesses to this and she DID NOT SLOW DOWN!!!! She is lying. she was excelerating and wasn't paying attention at all. He was almost all the way through the intersection when she rammed into him. She didn't even seem remorseful. More like it was a headache to have to stop and deal with this. Those DART drivers do not watch what they are doing and it's ridiculous!
Also factor in this is the driver's FOURTH accident since Feb. and you wonder how she is still even driving! Personally I still the hell away from these buses both when driving and walking across the street downtown because I've seen some near misses myself. They drive like they own the road and anyone that gets in their way is at fault not them.

    Two things Trav.

    1) Give me three minutes and I'll have an "eyewitness" post that says she was crying, near despondent about the event, and that on the whole DART bus drivers stop and clean up roadkill to keep the bus tires looking good.

It's a freebie comment to a newspaper article. The guy could be in Timbuktu for all we know. Hardly credible.

    2) The article states she's only had 1 prior accident.

"Green has been a driver for DART since Feb. 27 and had one accident prior to the one today."

Is there something that says otherwise. I do believe that "accident" as termed by DART, can mean just about anything.

Re: Another person hit by DART bus

As a former CyRide driver, I would never do it again. Let me tell you that is the highest stress job I've ever had and it's because idiots do not pay attention in high traffic areas. Driving through campus in the middle of the day was always a complete nightmare.

Now I'm not saying the driver wasn't at fault here, I don't know that. However people need to take responsibility because driving a bus is extremely difficult and you can't be on top of everything going on inside and outside of your bus.

The newer article says 4 accidents...

Pedestrian tells Des Moines police he had right of way in bus accident | DesMoinesRegister.com | The Des Moines Register

This is the fourth accident Green has been involved in since she started at DART on Feb. 27. Last month, she reportedly hit a parked car. Before that, she sideswiped a moving vehicle and was involved in an accident on DART property, officials with DART said.

Re: Another person hit by DART bus

There are several buses on the pedestrian mall in downtown Denver. I am amazed how many people just step out in front of those buses. Even riding on one can get unnerving. I have seen people, oblivious to their surroundings, pushing strollers in front of oncoming buses.

At some point, you have to figure that social Darwinism is in play and accept that stupid people will weed themselves out.

Re: Another person hit by DART bus

Ok - yeah, she needs to be gone.

I'm not overly familiar with bus design. But from what I can tell you have ALOT of window to the front and right of the driver through the door.

What blind spot? The guy is in front of you and about 6 feet away.

And I doubt that a bus making a turn is going to "slide" that far on wet pavement.

Edit: She was turning left. The door doesn't even come into play. Perhaps DART needs traffic control officers down in the Ped area?

One time in Ames on Osborn, I was looking at a guy between two parked cars, not in a crosswalk, we made eye contact for several seconds and he still continued and walked out in front of me. I feel like bus drivers are good drivers but honestly so much stuff happens in high foot traffic areas where people feel like they can just walk across the street and not have to wait. It was infuriating.
