    Impressions - No Promises

JP, in a general introductory way, mentioned Coach taking ISU into a whole new, never before experienced era and bringing championship football to Ames. Coach made no promises - didn't state a goal - I hope he does at some point. He made no promises about longevity. He seemed to feel no urgency to put together his staff - I hope that was to deflect daily media questions. He needs staff to evaluate the team and to catch up to the recruiting cycle. I'm confident that he has high goals and will be up and running ASAP or JP wouldn't have brought him here.

“We’ve got a pretty good football conference, and we’ve got a pretty good conference overall. We’re still walking around with our heads held high and our chest out, about that.” Paul Rhoads

    Re: Impressions - No Promises

He seemed like a man of less BS-ing and more REAL outcome to me. As I posted this on other post, here's my take on him:

    What I liked:

GC is as professional as you can be, and he seemed extremely serious.

    What I didn't like:

    - Not much humor
    - Never said "Go cyclones!"
    - No specific answers to key questions unlike Greg M saying he will introduce the concept of defense and bring back the hilton magic.

    First impression:

    - This man knows what he is capable of
    - He knows he won't get away with BS-ing
    - He loves small town, and he is full of family values

    Overall:

I like him, its about time we hire someone who does LESS TALKING and produce MORE RESULTS.

Tremendous coach, no doubt about it..

    Re: Impressions - No Promises

I was a little disappointed at first with the lack of specifics, but I would much rather have a guy who will analyze the situation thoroughly before laying out some huge plan. I am sure it will be a whirlwind from here on out. Glad Jeremy got the new server!

    Re: Impressions - No Promises

Does anyone know the difference between recruiting and hiring in this case? Or is it figure of speech?

    Re: Impressions - No Promises

he was very honest and straightforward. no sugarcoating. and thats what u gotta like about him.

I remember many of you hated Mac for doing just that on his weekly show after a loss.

Let the man be judged for what he does on the field and not what he says at a presser.

    GO STATE.

    Re: Impressions - No Promises

    Posted from another thread:

I didn't get a great vibe from him... from what I saw, he looked nervous, almost like he wasn't sure what he was doing there. I guess I got spoiled by G-Mac's presser, and it's probably easier to move in-state than it is to move 10+ hours from your home.

I got a little turned off when he took off the hat, but I guess it's easier to be able to see the crowd with it off.

I think we gotta give the guy some credit. He just got into town and still has plenty to wrap up in Texas - of course he's not going to have all the answers.... yet.

    Re: Impressions - No Promises

The press conference was about what I expected. He may not be the best speaker, but he got the job done tonight. I'll let his performance as head coach the next few years do the talking. He'll warm up as time goes on.

I thought he took off the hat to be able to wear his glasses. It looked like he tried to put them on, and couldn't, so he removed the hat.

I remember GMac taking off his hat too, some people just don't like wearing hats.

    Re: Impressions - No Promises

You really have to cut him some slack since from what I know he has been in town for no more than 12 hours and has to go back tonight so it is going to turn into a long day for both Gene and his family.

I'm not expecting too much from him right now, it will take time for him to get adjusted to Ames after living in Austin.

I feel it's a figure of speech. When he said that he felt special that he was "recruited" I took it to mean that the method Pollard approached him was that of a coach recruiting a player. He wasn't just offered the job, he was recognized, scouted, sought out, and signed. Just like a high-end recruit, Iowa State wanted to show how much we wanted him and how much he would like it.

    Re: Impressions - No Promises

I think everyone is over frickin analyzing. He said he loved the small town...wanted to recruit his son in 12 years. to ISU.. etc. I thought it went well. Most coaches will leave take their hat off when they talk in a formal press conference. It just looks stupid. I like this guy A LOT!!
