    market under 9k

Ok people when do we finally admit that there is a major crash. When will the government realize that giving money to companies so that they waste it will not work. I see my 401k going down fast every day. Its time to put a stop to all this.

I think the so called financial gurus on TV need to shut their traps, the are causing fear in a lot of people right now.

One thing I am sure of is the markets will go back up and there will be a lot of rich people after that happens.

    Re: market under 9k

The good news is that the slowing economy has put too much fear into the oil market speculators and they have ran away. And what do you know.... oil has plummetted.

Oil is now approximately $86.50/barrel. Remember when most thought we'd never see it below $100 again? Gas in Ames is also $2.89/gallon now. For me as a student, this market meltdown has had little effect on me (currently). As long as I'm still able to get student loans I'll be OK. I know that this market meltdown is hurting people who have investments in the stock market, but it will eventually go back up. I'm just hoping that the economy is in decent shape by the time I graduate so I don't have to worry too much about getting a job. (It seems as if it hasn't reached that point yet.) It's actually a really great time to be investing. I wish I would have graduated school about two years ago and have a job so I could be investing right now.

The sky will eventually quit falling and we'll all be OK.

Principal just dipped below $16. Our IPO was like $18.50 in 2001.

Since late last year when our price was up near $72 we are down 79%. There are a ton of 401(k)'s hurting in Des Moines right now.

My dad sold his Principal stock when it was up above $70, I think he is glad that he did.

    Re: market under 9k

I'm LOVING This. Sorry for those of you guys that are farther along in your career path and don't have much time to recoup your losses. Hopefully you are largely out of stocks by now and more heavily into bonds etc. For those of us that are graduating in 2 months and are just about to start pumping into our 401 K this is some bargain investing. After a fall off like this with the exception of the Great Depression I believe, within a year the market has recovered at least 80 % of it's losses.

I'm with you 100% though about the government needing to stop dumping money on it. The idea of the government actually buying preferred stock in banks is making me sick. Is capitalism so dead in this country that when a crises hits we view moving toward socialism as the answer rather than allowing the markets to function. I can see trying something to open up the credit markets, but I don't see how the US government buying private banks is going to help that. When the congress and the administration both face an economic crises and go ahead with an unpopular socialist plan to "save" the market the American people need to stand up to it. I got my absentee ballot and voted against all the incumbents who viewed socialism as the solution to our problems.

Seems to me that the reason we have elections in this republic is to throw out those who don't follow the wishes of the people. That vote made me a single issue voter. I didn't check if they were Dem or Rep just if they supported a horrible plan that was unpopular by the American public and against the grain of what the American economy is based on. America needs to realize that a approval rating of congress that's in the 10 percent range means their congressional delegation too not just everyone elses, and that voting for an incumbent will not change anything.

    End of Rant.
