We're going to state! (In soils judging.)

Our team qualified for state in soils judging today, finishing second in our district. It was miserable, and cold, and really, really wet, and the lady still had it. It was worth it though, so I'll be in Ames saturday for state soils...hopefully we win it.

    Congrats to cyismydog

For making it to state in soil judging. Some here won't understand, but making it to state FFA contests is a ton of fun. I went in Parliamentary Procedure, Conduct of Meetings, Meats Judging, Ag Business, and Dairy Products. I hope you make it in many more contests!!

FFA is the most under rated educational program in the state. It is so much more than farming.

Yeah, my computer's busted, and it hasn't got fixed yet, so I haven't been able to get on much lately. Don't worry, I get on when I can.

Is this going to be taken place at Town Engineering Building on ISU's campus by chance?

I find this interesting cause I am in Soils right now just got done classifying soils probably by the same way you do it also. I'd like to hear more about this, as it's very interesting and I don't think many people here know how much time and work it takes to classify soils.

We just cut out the triangle and turned it into a dart-board. Good luck to you!

Gees that brings back memories. Both the triangle and FFA contests.
Cheers to Extemp and Prepared Public Speaking Contests. I was lucky enough to compete on the state level of one of them many years ago...

FFA was awesome. Teaches great leadership skills as well. I went to state in Ag Sales and had a blast. Also, if you guys get the chance to go to nationals, GO. It's awesome!

I think the soils judging is more from an Agronomy standpoint. In engineering (I'm a geotechnical student at ISU right now) we classify on the basis of engineering properties (particle size, liquid limit, plastic limit). What they do is classify it more on composition (sand, silt, clay) as well as horizon (O,A,E,B) and properties of those horizons. For example, Bt would be a B horizon with clay accumulation, if I remember correctly.

    Either way, yay soil!

Re: We're going to state! (In soils judging.)

Congrats. Way back in the day I managed to get third in the state individually in soil judging. As I recall there were about 6 or 7 questions you had to get right (namely slope, location type, texture, coloring) and the rest of the card could be filled out based on those. I have never seen that triangle you guys are talking about.

I think I'll just stick to Construction Engineering.

And I have never seen such a triangle that they are talking about. Although, I just smoked through my CE 360 test in about 25 minutes last night. It was cake...and gotta love Terazaghi
