    HD OTA Question

So I have my rabbit ears hooked up in my home in Waukee to get HD channels and most all the ones that are supposed to show up, but 5.1 WOI does not. Is there something I am doing wrong or do I need a better antenna? I figured in Waukee it would be easy to pick up with just the rabbit ears.

    Re: HD OTA Question

might not be strong enough of a signal for that antenna or that placement. can you move or point the antenna?

    Re: HD OTA Question

My guess is that Channel 5's HD signal, like the rest of their podunk station, is weak. Better antenna would probably do the trick.

    Re: HD OTA Question

You can go to www.antennaweb.org to see the direction you need to point your antenna and the distance you are from the antenna towers for receiving your local stations. I believe that the channel 5 towers are located at the same point as the other major central Iowa / Des Moines stations.

    Re: HD OTA Question

Ch5 is usually the problem because they are in a diff range than the rest of the channels. A good antenna will solve this problem.

    Re: HD OTA Question

To put a big kink in things - after the transition in Feb, all the local channels will be on a different frequency and band than their current HD channels. Instead of UHF, the good channels will all be VHF, except for Fox - and ABC will be a low-band VHF which is very hard to get to come in if you get a standard UHF/VHF-High antenna. Most of the antennas currently being marketed as "HD Ready" are simply just UHF antennas, ones that will be of little use in Feb for central Iowans. Granted, they'll get the new signals if the signal is good enough, but they won't work in most other situations. Channel 5 will be the hardest yet, moreso than now even.

A good antenna, if you can mount in the attic or on the roof, would be the Winegard Ghost Hunter 7210p - it will block out the multi path if you live in urban areas. I live near Valley Junction and have a 7210p ready to put up now that our roof work is done. It will be replacing a Antenna Direct DB2 which is great for strictly UHF but useless for VHF.

See the attachments for a good idea of pre and post transition signals for Iowa.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

    Re: HD OTA Question

Interesting. I didn't realize this before, but when I checked antennaweb, sure enough it is true. I really don't like the fact that the digital OTA service is going to change that drastically in february. I just convinced my wife that we could ditch the cable. This may throw a wrench into things.

    Re: HD OTA Question

Channel 5.1 sucks big time. I'm lucky to pick it up in West Des Moines.

How is this really any different? Just swap whatever new antenna out you need.
