    Time to get excited!!!

I am really looking foward to the 2009 season. If everyone's healthy, this could be a really exicting year for ISU WBB. With Wieben back, and some exciting freshmen, we are going to having an excellent offense with 4 double digit scorerers returning. The weaknesses I see, a little speed at the perimenter, and I would like to see another 6'3" forward for the tall teams.

So, I think I know who 4 of the 5 starters are. Any guesses on the 5th?

Aus, Bolte, Ezell, & Wieben 4 of the 5.

I see Ross, Nisleit, perhaps Williams or Yackley competing for that #4?

I know J Anderson is back-up for Wieben, but I would enjoy seeing them do some high low.

My predictions for the Big 12

    1. Baylor - if all healthy, watch out.
    2. ISU - will benefit from north schedule.
    3. A&M - tough, tough tough, but now we have seen the system and players a few times.
    4. Texas - wild card
    5. OSU - One trick pony
    6. OU - CP just doesn't fit Coale's system well, = speed, plus major guard issues.
    7. KSU - Probably higher
    8. Nebraska - Great, great coach...., but NU starts strong and fizzles
    9. T Tech - still transitioning....not the coach Sharp was, but they are thinking they should have gotten Gail
    10. Colorado - great talent, not a great XOs coach...
    11. Mizzou - Great coach, needs some talent and leadership
    12. Kansas - My feelings of KU from saturday are still lingering.

What are your thoughts? Excited to see the new players play?

These opinions expressed herewith are soley the ramblings of an ISU fan and do not represent the opinion of cyclonefanatic.com, ISU, or the fanbase at large. (my sorry attempt at humor - been reading to many disclaimers in contracts these days)

I thought Anderson really improved her game throughout the season last year. I'd like to see her and Niki both on court at times.

I don't know the freshmen at all. Who should we watch out for?

    Re: Time to get excited!!!

Since she was a starter before, I would suspect it is T. Ross' spot to start with. Anderson and Nisleit's experience from last year makes the team that much stronger. BF coaches each game one at a time. If having Anderson and Weiben on the floor at the same time gives us the match-up he wants then it will happen from time-to-time.

I think it will be great to have to solid centers splitting time. I think Ross will be a starter. The depth on this team is amazing.

I think we could possibly win the Big12 this season and advance past the second round.

1 - Aus (with Whitney Williams backing up, moving Aus to wing)
    2 - Ezell
    3 - Bolte
    4 - Nis
5 - Anderson / Wieben (I think Jos will win out)

Who do you see as the starting point. Aus did a good job - especially in the area of turnovers - so important to BF. But, I had the impression she would rather be 2/3. If a young pg steps up, can you imagine Ezell coming off the bench?

I think if a young PG steps up, the starting 5 will be something like PG, Ezell, Aus, Bolte, Wieben/Anderson. This was a team last year that lived and died by the trey so I wouldn't be shocked at all to see 4 guards on the floor unless it's a matchup issue on defense.

I think for the first time I am really going to follow the women's team this year. I always get excited for them when they make the post season and kick myself for not knowing any of the players. Lets hope for another great year.

    Re: Time to get excited!!!

I like the makeup of this team but 2 things we've really been missing that seems to hurt us in the tournament is some speed and a player that can be physical and create their own shot and also be that shutdown defender as well. Rutgers were a much more physical and quicker team than us and when you aren't getting the looks we are used to on the perimeter you need that 1 or 2 players you just give them the ball and let them take it to the basket with no fear or beat someone off a screen for a shot and that is what we seem to lack usually.

    Re: Time to get excited!!!

I posted the below quote at hoopscoop 2 1/2 months ago, but I still agree with it. (This was before Rockall committed, so I didn't list her.)

If a freshman guard or two steps up, they could take some of the minutes away from the starting guards as well as Stuckey. It might be nice if Lacey and Ezell could avoid being in the top 10 in the conference in minutes per game so they can be fresher down the stretch. Last season, Lacey was #3 (34.8) and Ezell was #7 (33.3).

This is how I see ISU's rotation this upcoming season:

    PG: Lacey 33 mpg
    SG: Ezell 33 mpg
    3G: Bolte 30 mpg
    PF: Ross 25 mpg
    C: Wieben 27 mpg

    Reserves:
    Anderson 16 mpg (for Ross/Wieben)
    Nisleit 20 mpg (for Ross/Bolte)
    Stuckey 20 mpg (for guards)

Lightbourne and Arlen are available as post reserves
Mosman, Florzak, Williams, and Yackley are available as guard reserves

There always seems to be at least 5 or 6 mpg available for whichever bench guard is playing well in practice. Hard to say whether Arlen or Lightbourne will get any real PT barring injuries.

That adds up to more than 200 minutes (40*5) but I'm not trying to be exact.

    Re: Time to get excited!!!

Also, I think there's no way Wieben and Ross aren't starting. I think people are forgetting just how good they are. Wieben was All-Big 12 Honorable Mention as a sophomore. Two years ago, Wieben averaged 12.0 ppg and 5.7 rpg and Ross averaged 10.7 ppg and 7.3 rpg. They were the #2/#3 scorers (Medders was #1) and #1/#2 rebounders for that team.

If they are both healthy, they are both All-Big 12 quality players.

I also don't expect to see a lot of 4-guard offense barring injuries or foul trouble. I could see it in some certain matchup situations, but not for extended periods of time. This team has too many talented post players to do much of that. I've been following this team for 12 seasons and I don't think I've ever said that before.

The only other team I've been this optimistic about was the 99-00 team. That was the year after we beat UConn and, like this season, every single player returned. That team ended up losing in the sweet 16 to Penn State on an offensive rebound/putback with only a few seconds left, and PSU went on to crush La Tech in the Elite 8. We get that rebound (or Megan Taylor makes the last-second shot she missed) and we probably make the Final Four.

That PSU game started not long after the infamous Elite Eight MBB game vs Michigan State ended. What a depressing night...
