Keith Murphy on ISU fans and mediocrity

Sorry if this has been posted but I couldn't find it. Thoughts?
I've heard far too many Cyclone fans discussing the positives and upside of Iowa State's close loss to #16 Kansas. Iowa State should have won that game, and until everybody in Cyclone Nation, from players to fans, is mad and won't in any way accept a meltdown like that, the mediocrity and close calls will continue in Ames.

Paging Parker. The same article says Lolo will be at Jordan Creek Friday from 5 - 7:00 pm.

Thats just dumb...a year and a half into Gene Chiziks ISU career and we should be hoping mad at losing by two to the 16th rated team in the nation? Get real...

What matters is, are the players mad? I think so.

Re: Keith Murphy on ISU fans and mediocrity

I agree with it. I am upset, but you can't dwell on negatives totally. I am sure that GC and the team are still spitting mad about the game, which is who should be feeling that way. I agree that ISU fans should not be content with making games close, but I don't want us to become Hawk or Husker fans, still fuming 3 hours afterwards on call in shows.

Re: Keith Murphy on ISU fans and mediocrity

Fans have long memories and have long term commitments.

Players/Coaches have short memories and 5-8 year stints.

It takes longer for fans to turn their thoughts around versus Player/Coaches. Year 4 or 5, Keith is right... year two.. he is wrong. I bet most if not all fans thought they were going to win until the 4th down play was whistled dead. The fans also saw a TON of improvement from the last game at JTS. They are hopeful and exCYted for the future. Sounds to me like KM lost all of his CyCredits on the game.

So basically Murph is saying that we should be more like Iowa fans....

Is it a tough loss? Of course it is! Does that mean we need to go bananas afterwards? Hell no.

One of my favorite things about ISU fans is that in general, we have a fairly realistic idea about how good or bad our team actually is. i.e. we aren't delusional.

With that, this year, comes the realization that we aren't a very good team right now. Doesn't mean we won't be at the end of the year. Doesn't mean we won't be next year. It just means that right now, beating a 2-3 Baylor team causes us concern.

A good team wins that game on Saturday. ISU is not a good team right now. If we win, it's really beyond most people's expectations, and the capability of the team - if not the potential. If we lose, well, that's basically reality saying hey, this is who you are right now.

    And it's true.

On the other hand, Iowa fans delude themselves into thinking their team is amazing and deserves to win every game. That turns many of them into tremendous dbs (not defensive backs...) for the majority of the year, making excuses about this or that or the other thing and claiming that a Big XI championship is their birthright, and they are only being screwed out of it by ___________*.

I'm sorry if that isn't the sort of fanbase I wish to associate myself with.

(* poor coaching, unfair penalties, cheating by other teams, the backup qb not being on the field, the other team playing their superbowl, acts of domestic terrorism, unfair police enforcement, societal discord, Nickleback's last album being so awesome that it distracted them and they didn't get a chance to cheer and accidentally cut off their mullet etc.)

Re: Keith Murphy on ISU fans and mediocrity

As a fanbase, so what if we're upset or not upset...what's going to change? You guys are right, what matters is if the coaches and players are upset, and it sounds like GC is. We're just early in the second year of this coaching staff...I'm not freaking out because we blew a lead to the #16 team in the country; better than not competing at all.

    Exactly!

Dear Keith Murphy: please explain to me how us fans "getting mad and not accepting mediocrity" has any effect on games?

Great post and I agree completely. I don't think ANY of us are happy at all about the way that game went down, but we know games like this come with rebuilding a program. We can see glimpses of what is to come in the future, and the future looks bright.

I guess the difference between us here and the folks in the eastern side of the state is that they are in the 10th or so year of their regime and are not seeing much improvement. They, like you said, have a deluded sense of what their team actually is, and whether or not they should win the games they are playing. Jon Miller's SoundOff show would be full of idiots calling in for the coach's head even if they played USC this Saturday and got beat handily.

You are what you are, our program is what it is at this point, right now its about watching players grow.

Who cares what the fans think...has no dwelling on how the team performs. What I do know is we show up to support our team each week, thats really all we can do.

Re: Keith Murphy on ISU fans and mediocrity

I'm mad as heck about it and moving on with life. This weekend was a Lost opportunity and there is no other way to say it! I don't hear fans, coaches or the team taking moral victories on the loss. Nor do I hear our fans, coaches, or the team blaming it on the ref's, the wind direction...
