For fans of college marching bands...

The ENTIRE Wisconsin marching band has been suspended for tonight's HOME game against Ohio State.

    From The Associated Press:
The University of Wisconsin marching band has been suspended indefinitely while allegations of alcohol abuse and sexual misconduct are investigated. The band was not allowed to play Saturday during a U.S. college football game between the No. 18 Badgers and No. 14 Ohio State at Camp Randall Stadium.

The university made the announcement at a news conference Friday, saying the behavior is consistent with conduct that put the band on probation in 2006.

Mike Leckrone, band director since 1969, said he made the decision and it was the first time in his tenure the entire band has ever been suspended and prevented from playing at a game. Leckrone said he informed the 300 band members at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

"My feeling was I hit them between the eyes with a sledgehammer," he said.

No details were immediately released about the behavior, only that it involved inappropriate alcohol use, hazing and sexualized behavior. Leckrone said it involved only a small number of band members, but it was significant enough to warrant the suspension.

He and Dean of Students Lori Berquam refused to discuss any details while the investigation by Berquam's office is ongoing.

Penalties for students who violate the university's code of conduct range from a reprimand to expulsion, Berquam said.

It's the latest in a series of high profile problems for the band.

In 2000 the university established a written code of conduct for the band.

In February 2007 the marching band's assistant director Michael Lorenz resigned after an internal report criticized his treatment of a female colleague during a rowdy band trip to Michigan in 2006.

Reports of band members' hazing, alcohol use and inappropriate sexual behavior prompted the university to put the band on probation after the trip.

Then-Chancellor John Wiley threatened band members with losing performance and travel privileges.

Wiley, in an October 2006 letter to Leckrone, called band members' behavior "boorish to patently dangerous and unlawful."

At that time, seminude band members were alleged to have danced suggestively and there were reports of women being forced to kiss other women to be allowed to enter bathrooms on a bus.

I don't think I've ever heard that before. I wonder if the fans will care?

Re: For fans of college marching bands...

The fans will care. The band is one of the best in the nation and has a high energy presence in the stadium.

If you have never been to a game at Camp Randall, you should go. Crazy experience (both good and bad). After the game, there is a "5th quarter" where the band goes back on the field and students stay in the stands dancing and singing. It is pretty cool.

The students and the band are both extremely roudy and generally exhibit poor sportsmanship throughout the game. Then at the beginning of the 5th quarter, they take turns taunting each other, the students flip off the band, etc. From a visitor standpoint, they will treat you pretty roughly during the game, then after the game, put their arm around you like a long lost friend and head to State Street for beers.

For all of the stereotyping that goes on for fraternities and sororities, bands are notorious for drinking and hazing incidents. Not trying to start something, not trying to say all bands are like this, just saying it's larger than most think.

It would be weird having a home game without the band there. It is easy to forget that they are there during the game, but I think it would be noticed if they were not there.

Sorry, but the State Fair Classic in Dallas today is what bands is all about. Grambling vs Prairie View on the football field. The band spectacle is in a single word = WOW. The music, the pageantry, the dancing... just awesome.

UW's band is good but you can't even really compare them to what those schools do. It's a completely different deal.

FAMU and Bethune Cookman bands always play at Florida's homecoming parade. That is worth the drive down just to see that...

Re: For fans of college marching bands...

Yeah, most of those Southern bands are what's called a 'show band', not corps-style marching bands like most of the country has (especially big schools). It's not bad, just a totally different style. The movie "Drumline" is a HORRIBLE representation of how a collegiate drumline works, but the whole-band performances are decent examples of a Southern show band.

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.

Re: For fans of college marching bands...

Well, I can speak first hand of alcohol problems of the ISUCF'V'MB in the mid-late 80s. Here's how a road trip went. Drink all evening, get on the bus at midnight and drink all through the early morning hours. People would bring suitcases full of booze. If one of the cruisers had wrecked at 3am on the way to Boulder it would have made an ugly splash in the media. Cans, bottles and drunk students all mixed together.

Then you'd sober up once the sun came up, get out of the bus by late afternoon, practice, and then watch a local high school game playing at halftime. A rather long tiring 24 hours and you haven't even started the actually game day yet. You didn't think anything of it at the time. Actually looked forward to it each year. And then there was the hotel party after the game. Pretty much a repeat of the bus.
