    How good is a Dish?

I am just buying a house and have for the first time a choice of cable or a dish. I was wondering of the people that have a dish what are the advantages that they have experienced.

Also why I am writing this I just got off the phone with a Mediacom call center for an hour just to transfer the service over to the new house. I am getting so sick and tired of Mediacom.

Re: How good is a Dish?

Well there was a thread exactly like this a few days ago, and I'm too lazy to search...

Go DirectTV. Dish's only advantage is that it's cheaper (I have Dish).

Edit: the only disadvantage to a dish is that the signal disappears in a storm. Mediacom sucks.

Direct TV, it's the way to go. Get rid of Mediacom and their terrible customer service.

Re: How good is a Dish?

How much TV do you watch? If you are like me and watch 20 hours a week or so then why spend the money on dish? I get cable, internet and phone for $93 dollars a month which includes DVR and taxes. Cable doesn't go out in rain or snow which is exactly what my dish did. I would venture to guess that the a lot of people on this board have $100 dish bills and to me it isnt worth it.

Qwest has the same deal, but your right about the rain.

I know it has been discussed a lot but I was just really frustrated after being on the phone my entire lunch break. Also I never had a choice before thats why I brought it up.

Re: How good is a Dish?

Dish is terrible when it comes to costumer appreciation. We had Dish since the late '90. Five plus years later (well after the contract was expired), we wanted to get a new receiver to replace the broken down beast that they originally sent us. They were going to make us buy a new receiver. At the same time, a new costumer would have got 3 new receivers for free. We thought about canceling and resubscribing, but you had to be a non dish customer for at least a year to get by with that.

Even replacing the remote. You would think that after 5 years, they would at least give you a new remote, nope- that's a hundred bucks.

Can't speak for the other services, but I would not get Dish.

I personally have Dish, and wish we had DirecTV.

Re: How good is a Dish?

Definitely don't transfer service if you get cable. Cancel and resubscribe to get whatever deal is out there now. I go back and forth between DISH and Mediacom to get their deals as I can't see paying a lot of money for TV. I leave my dish up so when I need to switch back all it takes is unscrewing one cord and reconnecting the other.

Re: How good is a Dish?

It's not as black and white as everyone makes it sound. Read up on the other threads and other places online. This website approaches the subject mostly from a sports programming angle (NFL Sunday Ticket, access to channels today like FCS which will make it to Dish in time), so take that for what it's worth.

There might be factors on either side that would make you easily swing one way or the other.
