    Cross Country

Pollard's goals include getting all the teams into the top half of the conference. One of the better improvements in recent years is in track, field and cross country. Coach Ihmels has to be one of the best hires we've ever made. Men's cross country has moved up to #11 in national polls. There haven't been a lot of competitions so rankings are a little speculative, but, this is a good step with a young team.

It should also help that the Big 12 Championships are right here in Ames, Iowa, this year. I'd love to see them back on top!

Ihmels has been cross country coach for the past 8 seasons. If he has been such a good hire, where have the good performances been for the past 7 of those seasons? Only takes one or two good runners to improve cross country since only five score and as I understand he had half of the scholarships to work with. Not a very good use of scholarship money.

It doesn’t look like Ihmels did much in cross country until the last year or so and the distance runners have done little or nothing in track. I am not saying they haven’t improved this year just that maybe he had some help from outside sources that he held in reserve until he could take over the program.

I love Cross Country conspiracy theories. That is all.

Yeah, except for a little thing like Lisa Koll winning the NCAA 10,000 meters!!

To say that we've improved in Track and Field is a major stretch. Last year, the Men finished 11th in indoors and outdoors at the Big 12 meet. The women finished 10th and 9th respectively.

    Re: Cross Country

I don't know how much this plays into things as far as recruiting goes but we are unable to host an outdoor meet. I know from talking to a couple of the assistant coaches that a track might be in the works because they told me of the locations that were being looked at. The other thing is the weather as far as athletes being able to run on any outdoor track here. Again, I don't know how much harder that makes it to recruit an elite sprinter or distance runner but I would think it is a negative factor.

One thing that was done this summer is eleven new rings were poured over at the present track for throws. I think six are on the track and five are at the cross country course.

We do have one of the top four indoor tracks in the nation and a lot of teams come here to get their NCAA qualifying times.

That is true but (1) The original post was primarily about the men's cross country team and (2) Ihmels didn't coach women until last year. Lisa was at ISU for 2 years prior to Ihmels taking over the program and had previously qualified for the NCAA track and field championships.

I'm pretty sure Katie did not compete in the ISU Invitational a couple weeks ago. Also, I think Lisa and Grace will be competing in the indoor and outdoor track this winter and spring, they are only redshirting in cross-country.

I really like the sign they put up at the cross country course. There was nothing on that for a long time and finally they stick some nice lookin signs on it.

I think even the structure, or parts of it, were replaced because I've seen the guy working on it several times during the last few weeks. I'm excited to get to see the Big12 meet in person. There is a great spot on the course where the 8k course passes you three times and the 6k course passes you twice. If anyone is interested I'll try to post a map and that location.
