    Direct TV vs Dish Network

I'm just looking into possible going with sateilite tv and was wondering if anybody out there has some pros and cons with Direct tv and Dish network and who is going to give me the best deal. I mainly want it for the sport channels, but I'm also looking into getting it for HD channels as well. Any help would be great.

Re: Direct TV vs Dish Network

If you want to watch ISU, get DirecTV.. my buddy has dish in our apartment, and we've only gotten 1 ISU game.

Plus, (here in eastern Iowa) we don't get local HD channels with dish network. DirecTV offers them.

    DirecTV hands down IMO.

Re: Direct TV vs Dish Network

My only experience with Dish is watching it at my parents' house. They seem to be happy with it, but it doesn't take much to make them happy when it comes to TV.

I've had DirecTV since April and love it. I got it because of their HD offerings, and for the most part I haven't been disappointed with them. There are a handful of channels that claim to be HD but never (and I mean literally never) run HD programming. MTV, VH1, CMT, Nickelodeon, and ABC Family are the ones I can think of. I don't really watch those channels much anyway, but if you or anybody in your household does, don't be fooled by their "HD" designation. You won't get any HD programming on them--at least not from what I've seen. The rest of the HD offerings are great though.

I haven't signed up for any of DirecTV's sports offerings, but it seems like they have some great options with NFL, NHL, MLB, NASCAR and a sports pack with just about every sports channel in existence. They also offer multiple channel feeds during major, multi-day sporting events like some golf and tennis tournaments and the Olympics, and those are free.

EDIT -- By the way, I realize it's not DirecTV's fault that those channels I mentioned never run HD programming, but DTV does use them in its promotional material for its HD offerings. I'm just saying that from what I've been able to tell, they never run HD programming so I wouldn't call them HD channels.

Re: Direct TV vs Dish Network

The bigger question is how do you keep snow off of it during the winter...the answer is obviously SPAM.

Seriously though, I have DirectTV and have 0 complaints, but agree with the above that Dish Network is cheaper.

Re: Direct TV vs Dish Network

I have been a DirecTV customer for 7 years and have no complaints. As a sports fan its the only way to go. My sister has Dish and my brother in law complains about the sports he does not get to see as opposed to the ones I see. I have always been a firm believer in "you get what you pay for" and "why buy it if it does not give you what you want".

Re: Direct TV vs Dish Network

I have had both and here are the pros and cons in my opinion

    Dish Pros
-Great DVR that can be split between two televisions and only cost you $4.99 for one box split between two televisions
-Cheapest packages and least overall fees as my bill was around $45 I think for a three TV's hooked up with one being a DVR split on two Tv's and had America's top 100. Can buy a sports pack, but very basic as mostly same fox sports channels with the same games on each

    Directv
    - NFL, NHL and MLB options for packages
    - I believe more HD channels 130
    - Larger programming packages
    - Not as many programming disputes losing service on some channels at times

I've been with Directv for around 10 years or so....no complaints here. My sister used to have Dish and I was totally not impressed.

    I'll put it this way:

Number of Cyclone Football games available so far via DirecTV this year: 5 (SDSU, Iowa, UNLV, Kansas, Baylor)

Number of Cyclone football games available so far via Dish: 2 (Iowa, Kansas)
